Can someone fill me in on the latest current limits of IDE drives? Does the
128 GB limit still exist or in which OS's can it be exceeded?
Thanks, Andy

It’s a matter of the IDE interface firmware itself.

There might be no solution for the built-in interface. I own a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio with this limitation. My solution has been to attach a PCI IDE card. Now I can use 2x 1Tb HDs, both bootable.

Further info, just ask.

I installed a 250GB Drive on a PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4.11.
Yes there was a limitation, but I recall there was some software from OWC that helped.
I actually ended up partitioning the drive into 115 and 115 and 20 GB. It can run both OS 10.4.11 and OS 9.2.2. I still love MacDraw and have many files in this program. Andy Hertzfeld is a genius. He wrote MacDraw in assembler in 1984 and it still runs flawlessly on a G4 (as long as you set 1000s of colors). It was not 32 bit aware.

Here's a useful guide:

< http://lowendmac.com/2005/how-big-hard-drive-imac-emac-power -mac-powerbook-ibook/>

Here's a possibly- useful firmware hack:

< http://nanchatte.wordpress.com/2008/04/27/128gb-large-hdd-lb a48-support-on-the-g4-cube-with-leopard/>

I'm pretty sure I've seen this hack mentioned in relation to other G4 models as well.

I put a 160GB drive in my G4 400 last week - it shows as 128GB - neither my hardware or OS (<10.2) supports anything bigger.
Have a read of http://lowendmac.com/2005/how-big-hard-drive-imac-emac-power -mac-powerbook-ibook/ for increased understanding.

Try to finda a ACARD PCI IDE or SATA card. You'll be free of any limits.

I'm not sure, but I think you should avoid the ATA-66 cards. In other
words, look for a PCI--IDE card which supports ATA-100 or ATA-133.
Within the Acard brand you need an Acard 6280M or 6880M for IDE support and
a 6290M for SATA support.

The 128GB limitation existed in about the same time frame as when ATA-66
was the current best thing. So a lot of the cards that do ATA-66 do not
support larger than 128 GB partitions. There may be exceptions, but until
someone happens along with specific information, that's a pretty good rule
of thumb. I know that the VST UltraTek-66 never supported greater than 128
GB. There was an OSX firmware update, but never a greater than 128 GB
update.

There were also, as others have mentioned, some hard drive
formatting/initializing tool hacks which would give larger than 128 GB
support. Intech's Hard Disk SpeedTools provided such a tool, if I
remember correctly.

<http://www.speedtools.com/HDInfo.html>

I remember a user, "Peter" followed by some numerals, understood the 128GB
issue in detail and used to post very detailed messages about it, back when
it was a current issue. If you can identify his user ID, you might search
for messages from him on the topic.

Ah, just noticed there's a SpeedTools ATA Hi-Cap Driver for Mac OS X as
well:

His handle is peterh5322 and yes I was straining to remember this too. He knows this stuff inside and out. This is probably better found in the g-group list, as those are the actual machines involved. The PCI Powermacs never actually had ATA interfaces :-)

Here's one thread on the subject < https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/g3-5-list/128$20G B$20limit/g3-5-list/qvbjmC4ieHE/rpSNEH7bO-UJ>

He shows up as 'PH' in the thread.

Thanks once again all,

Tons of good info. I've got an old Sonnet Card I may put into service
and an old AIO 266 Molar Mac I may mess around with.
I'm going to partition at 128GB to be careful and use SpeedTools Hi
Cap Extension.
But ya know I think the best solution is an SSD with an IDE interface
- OWC has them.

Take Care, Andy

As Bruce said go to
<http://groups.google.com/group/g3-5-list>
and in "search for topics" at the top of the page enter "hard drive limit" or "LBA48"

You find many of posts including a number by Peter. All the info you need to know and more including the Open Firmware hack; which PCI cards work, formating software and much more --glen
