To make your mac talk, open up a terminal windows and type:
say "Hello, world"
The words in quotes will be spoken using the default selected voice in OS X.
OS X comes with 20+ voices available by default. Here's a list of what's available in Leopard (10.5.8):
Female Voices
- Agnes
- Kathy
- Princess
- Vicki
- Victoria
Male Voices
- Alex
- Bruce
- Fred
- Junior
- Ralph
Novelty Voices
- Albert
- Bad News
- Bahh
- Bells
- Boing
- Bubbles
- Cellos
- Deranged
- Good News
- Hysterical
- Pipe Organ
- Trinoids
- Whisper
- Zarvox
To use a voice other than the default, use the '-v' option (e.g. say -v "Pipe Organ" "Hello, world")
