Please read the essay so your reply will be cogent to
the original post. This is about the author's original
intention and how the manga was subverted to increase the
popularity of the anime.
By all means read the Manga and watch the Anime so
that the essay will be clearer to you.
I have not read the original manga but I have watched
all but the last season of the Sailor Moon Anime. I found
the later seasons to become increasingly cloying. I rented
the anime several years ago. When it was on TV in the SFBA
I ignored it pretty much as in those distant days I thought
I had more important matters to which to attend.
Strangely it was not long until I was trying to watch
the Americanized version of "Card Captors".

I have seen the first 3 episodes on HULU, and I think it is quite
enjoyable, though I still think the girls look, for want of a better
word, weird, in their "battle armor."
I don't know how close it is to the manga as I have never read the manga
and am not enough of a manga fan to have any real plans to do so.
However, I saw the comment that the first episode of the new Sailor Moon
Crystal series follows the manga almost exactly.
As an aside, my favorite character is the "smart one," such as Ami/sailor
mercury in Crystal or the original Sailor Moon, Honoka/Cure White in
Pretty Cure, Mai/Cure Egret from pretty Cure Splash Star (my favorite
from the pretty cure series), etc.
