This confuses me a bit and not that much data is available yet unless in
Japanese.
I am sure some of the Japanese literate can let us know what is going on
with
the 1st, 7 disk box set.
Looks like L-E is trying to do something like a Kickstarter to buy the
box set.
Only editing done was to replace the "()" put around the URLs with "<>"

¥34,835 (approx. $400.00 U.S.)??? And that's just "Box 1," not the entire
series!!!

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Dxd5L2n zNGsJ:www.amazon.co.jp/YAWARA-Blu-ray-BOX1-%25E7%258C%25AA%2 5E7%2586%258A%25E6%259F%2594-%25E7%259A%2586%25E5%258F%25A3% 25E8%25A3%2595%25E5%25AD%2590/dp/B00L2VCR02+&cd=1&hl =en&ct=clnk

It's quite insane that DVD and Blu-ray are still so expensive in Japan but
over there almost nobody has to own a car so they have a lot of disposable
income!

I recently acquired a live-action Azumi movie for a buck and noticed that
the retail price was ¥8,000.

Sorry manga-philes I did not mean to send this to rec.art.manga.
Kenneth I can only agree with your remarks anent the prices.
Apparently fans and otaku in Japan are willing to live on poor food
(as does Madarame in Genshiken) to spend these inordinate sums.

I carefully(partially by accident) constructed a life in San Francisco
where I need no car. Which is well because there is no way
I can afford to own a car in San Francisco even if I gave up on my
manga/anime and computer hobbies.

I'd guess that average income in Japan is about the same as America.
However, the spending habits are drastically different because of the
culture. It seems quite common to shell out more than a hundred buck on
sushi dinner over there. (In contrast, you can still enjoy a nice dinner
for thirty dollars in America.) I do not even want to bring up the die-cast
toy industry that is clearly aimed at grown men because they are quite
expensive. (Search "Chogokin" in eBay.) Japanese women would spend
thousands of dollars on Gucci or Prada handbags and shoes because, once
again, they have a lot of money socked away.

Over there you don't need a car and owning a car is still quite uncommon.
In America, if you buy a car on a loan, add insurance, fuel, maintenance,
and it's easily $5,000 a year and you can't go to work without a car in most
places. That's a huge chunk of your take-home income going toward just
transportation. I own an SUV now but was shocked to find that one
replacement tire costs $160! Bobbie, you are lucky that you don't need a
car because parking costs a fortune in San Fran.

Even laser disc (if anyone remembers it) was a huge hit in Japan because of
collector mentality over there.

BTW, Urazawa Naoki did another sports manga called Happy! immediately after
Yawara because Yawara was such a huge hit in Japan. You could tell that he
was pretty much out of ideas by Happy! and if you place two series side by
side, you can immediately tell that he rehashed the same premise.

If you are eating sushi in the USA be prepared to spend a lot
as good fresh sushi is very expensive. The larger plastic models are
out of my reach so i won't bother with looking at the die cast metal.
Here we have scale model trains and ships that are meant for the
well-off adult (mostly male) population.
As for me I seldom eat outside my home as I have as a result of
my illness, sensitivities to so many common foods that i fell
uncomfortable trusting cooks and chefs in most establishments.

You are not telling me anything I didn't already know. I gave up my
car because the cost of parking plus insurance would leave me nothing
for rent. Finally gave up the motorcycle as well because doing
the maintenance was exhausting and the cost of insurance as well as
parking seemed very likely to interfere with paying my rent.

My dear dead gay friend Robin had laser disks player and a couple of
disks. I bought them from him(becasuse he needed the money)and later
sold them when I realized how much space and money
they took up. DVDs are better but I keep my little collection small
so that I have room. The manga are another matter but until I got too
sick to work i have always been buying books. Very rare now that I buy
any books but manga and with the current prices of food and computer
parts, i am not chasing the manga too hard.

I am not surprised at the problem of Urazawa because despite his
equal excellence we see a lot of repetition in Adachi's work. Usually
someone important to the characters dies so that the other characters
are motivated to make greater efforts.

If you read the book on the Manga Industry "Adult Manga" -
Sharon Kinsella (cr) 2000 – SFPL. Subtitled "Culture and Power in
Contemporary Japanese Society", I think that you might see the problems
in the contradiction between the idea of an industry and an art. The
readers and the publishers make demands on the artists that are
incompatible with the creative impulse and it takes a great deal of
imagination to produce great stories and narrative works of art,

I am not surprised at the problem of Urazawa because despite his
equal excellence we see a lot of repetition in Adachi's work. Usually
someone important to the characters dies so that the other characters
are motivated to make greater efforts.

---------------------------------

According to the afterward in Happy!, Urazawa claimed that the editor made
him do another sports manga despite his not wanting to do another one.

Ironically, Urazawa's stories tend to drag out quite a bit, often to the
point that I cannot remember the original premise. (See Monster and 20th
Century Boys that went on for more than twenty volumes each.) Even the
eight-volume Pluto (based on a famous Astro Boy arc) required my re-reading
it several times in order to finally get it.

There are several events taking place in SF Japantown this summer. Bobbie,
if you want to meet up, I'd be glad to buy you a bento.

http://sfjapantown.org/news-events.html

Every book by Adachi could be summed up as "two boys who play sports that
compete for the same girl's affection." And yes, one of them usually dies.

The pressure of holding down a weekly serial is hard to imagine, especially
if you are writing and drawing all by yourself. Many manga artists do not
live too much past the age of sixty due to karou-shi (death by overwork). I
can only name one (famous) manga artist that actually retired and his name
is Umezu Kazuo, the granddaddy of horror manga. And he retired because he
got Carpal Tunnel and couldn't draw any longer.

Anyone read Umezu at all? I have seen Drifting Classroom and Orochi
translated into English. Some older kids showed me his work when I was in
kindergarten and it truly frighten me. It's just the the way he draws and
the moody shading effects.

Did not work for me but the following

I will get back to you about that.

I have seen Drifting Classroom but it is not the sort of thing
I usually find interesting. I sort of had few horrible moments in my
life and don't care too much for the imitations of horror,

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Amazingly, some can meet the weekly deadline for decades and decades without
missing an issue. Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen Mae Hashutsujo
(こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所) is the longest running manga and has been going strong
since 1977.

http://kochikame.wikia.com/wiki/Manga

Last time I checked, it had around 170 volumes.

I think not running out of idea is more important than being able to draw
rapidly as manga isn't drawn as detailed as American comics.

According to Bakuman, you might barely break even after you pay your
assistants and a serial isn't profitable until you receive royalty from the
collected volumes. Before video games a volume could sell millions but not
these days and you'd be very lucky if you break 100,000 copies.
