Super late to the party, I know, but I'm finally getting around to watching Pokemon Origins on Hulu.

Typed live, as I was watching, so it may be a bit incoherent.

- Instant mashing of the nostalgia button from the word go, starting with the in-game interface.
- Why is Red (i.e. Ash) so goddamn stupid??? He's a ten year old kid who's obsessed with Pokemon, for crying out loud. You'd think he would've studied up on everything Pokemon related (like how every 90s kid did when the Pokemon craze first hit). Instead, he's blankly repeating every bit of information exposited at him (Metal Gear?!?). You can't even blame the lack of a Pokedex for this--matches are apparently regularly televised, and if memory serves correctly Professor Oak is said to host an edutainment show about Pokemon. But Red doesn't know a thing about battling--forget STAB moves or EV training, he doesn't even have the slightest clue about type advantages!
- Blue (Gary motherfucking Oak), as always, is a douche. I hope he gets good character development later. (Nope. Son, I am disappoint.)
- Aww, didn't get to see Magikarp evolve onscreen.
- Red somehow made it through Rock Tunnel without getting ambushed by a million Zubats. I call shenanigans!
- And of course, Shit Gets Real Grimdark Real Fast; without Nintendo of America censoring policies to keep things at the implications level, there's now realistic violence and on-screen death.
- Number of useless adults: the entire non-Team Rocket population of the world, it seems. Those Grunts only have scrub Pokemon like Rattata, Zubat, Ekans, etc!
- (Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town) Damn you Pokemon and your ability to pull on my heartstrings! Right in the feels!
- (vs. Giovanni at Sylph Co.) Whoops, you're not supposed to make the villain sound more reasonable than the hero! Or maybe it's just cynical adult logic kicking in.
- (vs. Sabrina) Game Freak, you liars, Ghost types had no effect on Psychic types in Gen I!
- ...but at least Blue's no longer carrying non-existent badges.
- (vs. Giovanni at Viridian) Cue the theories that Giovanni is Red's father!
- ...okay, that "save" message at the end of each episode is getting kind of annoying now, and this is only episode 4. (At least this is only 5 episodes long.)
- (Elite Four and vs. Champion Gary) At least Red Super Effective'd everyone except Blue.
- (filling out the Pokedex epilogue) Hi Pikachu! Bye Pikachu! And just a bit disappointed that there wasn't a Missingo joke thrown in there--just have a pixelated mess wander by on Cinnabar beach and Red decide he'd rather not try to catch it or something. (The past me who played Pokemon Blue version as a high school student is feeling just a bit bitter that Red got to catch em all legit--there were no on-screen trades shown at all.)
- ...aaaaand plot powers activate! (Also a little bit of convenient retcon to work the newest mechanics introduced in Pokemon X and Y into the 'Verse.)

Last thoughts: If you were a certified Pokemaniac when the Gen I games came out, the feels will definitely hit you like a truck. I'm too much of a cranky old lady to get nostalgia bombed, but it's still a pretty good fluff piece.

This isn't going to make me run out and buy a Wii U just for Pokemon X/Y though. That's, like, at least a month's worth of grocery money!
