This is a PBS show featuring Japanese Americans
The episode title is Mrs. Judo - Look for it.
I was not sure of the spelling of her name so I used Google
and here is her Wiki entry:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keiko_Fukuda>

This is what I learned from the show.
Mrs.Judo practicing for over 70 years was a disciple of Jigoro Kano'
founder of Kodokan Judo, never married because she was married
to Judo. What that meant was that since she wanted to do Judo she
could not be the wife most Japanese men wanted in the 1930s to
stay at home and care for his needs.

She taught Judo in Japan and in the USA of which nation she became
a citizen of, taught military and civilian police forces in order to be
permitted to stay in USA. Taught a lot of people in in those years in
Japan and in the USA. Born 1913 recruited to Judo 1934 by Jigoro,
and died 2013 in February a month short of her 100th bd.

She started studying about the time the fictional Jigoro (from the
manga and anime) moved to Tokyo to study and she came to Tokyo
to study Judo.
She came to the USA shortly after WW II but had to return
to Japan. After a few years working as a teacher for a pittance she
came back to the USA where a friend helped her get a break on the
immigration quotas as her teaching was valuable to the National Defense
as testified thousands of military and civilian judoka she had taught.
Thought the authorities of Judo dragged their feet on giving her higher
degrees eventually she was awarded 10th degree black belt around the age
of 99. The Kodokan Judo school though raised several men to 10th degree
before she was raised to 9th degree. Dedicated disciples were responsible
for advancing her cause.

Anyhow the scenes of the prewar joshi Judo students practicing together
is wonderful and looks like a dance. As she got older she looked a lot like
Yawara's grandmother(as seen in the Yawara anime in the shrine picture).

She left behind lots of skilled teachers and the dojo she founded is on
Castro Street around 25th.
