It's always been simply a vague idea as to how many movie would be required
and there has never been a fully set-in-stone storyline. As George Lucas has
written the movies one-by-one, that vague storyline has been changed. I
don't know about that boxed set, but the original idea for the third trilogy
involved Luke going to the other side of the Galaxy to find his sister, and
together they defeat the Emperor ... obviously once Leia became Luke's
sister, that storyline couldn't happen.

Added to this is the usual inaccuracy of the "journalism" profession.
Depending on what you read you can find supposed quotes from George Lucas as
"proof" that Star Wars is anything from one movie through to as series of 12
movies. :-\
