Well the URL below will take you to an analysis with case examples
of what happens to Japanese youth who
do not realize the need to apply themselves from Middle
School and cram school onward.

It is a fairly long article again and shows for example why Keiko
of Genshiken ends up working in a hostess bar.

This article is too long!

Isn't it ironic that , U.S., which much higher high-school dropout rate,
place more emphasis on going to college? In Japan you must take an exam for
each university you apply to and quite often, many students would spend a
year or more after high school cramming full-time in order to get accepted
into the school of their choosing (or any school that would accept them you
they are desperate).

On the other hand, if you are good at sports or have aspiration to become
manga artists (like in Bakuman), you can see that you do not have to study
at all in Japan and you can still graduate high school. Despite six years
of English, I read somewhere that many Japanese still pronounced 1 (one) as
"oh-ne." Almost none can recite January through December.

Bullying in school is just being brought to attention in U.S. (because of
cyber-bulling) but it has always been highly debated in Japan.

And school is very stressful in Japan. I read somewhere that on average, 86
people commit suicide in Japan each day.

Middle class is a very recent invention as far as civilization goes. We
ought to be at least grateful that capitalism allowed such class to even
exist.

Japanese students have to take exams to get to a good middle school and
high school. The students who graduate without study or
special talents/skills can do because of passing tests which they may
take as often as required. The process is discussed in the article.
Dropping out of HS in the USA is most often very negative to
the future life of the dropped out. But frequently these are people
who have like the Japanese students described at the low end HS
in the article failed to understand the connection between education
and a good life. They started this failure in middle school and most
likely their parents equally failed to understand the importance of
Study. Such is often the case in the USA but without the Exams it is
not so clear.
I see on the PBS lots of educational tactics to awaken modern
day students to their potential while 50 years ago in my parochial
school memorization of the catechism(Baltimore) was often the most
important thing on the teachers schedule.

Because most the teachers find it onerous as well.

Actually USA bullying was concentrated on non-gender conformant
students and people who were thought to be gay were lucky to stay in
school until graduation. Same for other non-conformists. The gay
rights movement has made some impact on this but the cyber-bullying
helped get the movement underway.

Not all are students because whether student or worker, life
according to the official schedule, is very stressful.

Well capitalism in the USA seems bent on wiping out the middle class by
exportation of work. Left with incomes not keeping up with
inflation the middle class must patronize the companies that moved the
work overseas and which sell what was once domestically produced to
the Americans.

And the middle class is largely not a capitalist creation but a side
effect of the increase prosperity attending the industrial revolution.
In the USA the middle class was responsible for the national industrial
capacity which was so well deployed during WW II.
But the greed of the owners, landlords, and elite management have
torpedoed the middle class putting the savings in their filled pockets.
Well I could rant on but why bother.
