Antimatter experiment produces first beam of antihydrogen

The ASACUSA experiment at CERN (Image: Yasunori Yamakazi )

The ASACUSA experiment at CERN has succeeded for the first time in
producing a beam of antihydrogen atoms. In a paper published today in
Nature Communications, the ASACUSA collaboration reports the
unambiguous detection of 80 antihydrogen atoms 2.7 metres downstream
of their production, where the perturbing influence of the magnetic
fields used initially to produce the antiatoms is small. This result
is a significant step towards precise hyperfine spectroscopy of
antihydrogen atoms.

Primordial antimatter has so far never been observed in the universe,
and its absence remains a major scientific enigma. Nevertheless, it is
possible to produce significant amounts of antihydrogen in experiments
at CERN by mixing antielectrons (positrons) and low energy antiprotons
produced by the Antiproton Decelerator.

The spectra of hydrogen and antihydrogen are predicted to be
identical, so any tiny difference between them would immediately open
a window to new physics, and could help in solving the antimatter
mystery. With its single proton accompanied by just one electron,
hydrogen is the simplest existing atom, and one of the most precisely
investigated and best understood systems in modern physics. Thus
comparisons of hydrogen and antihydrogen atoms constitute one of the
best ways to perform highly precise tests of matter/antimatter
symmetry.

Matter and antimatter annihilate immediately when they meet, so aside
from creating antihydrogen, one of the key challenges for physicists
is to keep antiatoms away from ordinary matter. To do so, experiments
take advantage of antihydrogen’s magnetic properties (which are
similar to hydrogen’s) and use very strong non-uniform magnetic fields
to trap antiatoms long enough to study them. However, the strong
magnetic field gradients degrade the spectroscopic properties of the
(anti)atoms. To allow for clean high-resolution spectroscopy, the
ASACUSA collaboration developed an innovative set-up to transfer
antihydrogen atoms to a region where they can be studied in flight,
far from the strong magnetic field.

"Antihydrogen atoms having no charge, it was a big challenge to
transport them from their trap. Our results are very promising for
high-precision studies of antihydrogen atoms, particularly the
hyperfine structure, one of the two best known spectroscopic
properties of hydrogen. Its measurement in antihydrogen will allow the
most sensitive test of matter/antimatter symmetry. We are looking
forward to restarting this summer with an even more improved set-up,"
says Yasunori Yamazaki of RIKEN, Japan, a team leader of the ASACUSA
collaboration. The next step for the ASACUSA experiment will be to
optimize the intensity and kinetic energy of antihydrogen beams, and
to understand better their quantum state.

Progress with antimatter experiments at CERN has been accelerating in
recent years. In 2011, the ALPHA experiment announced trapping of
antihydrogen atoms for 1000 seconds and reported observation of
hyperfine transitions of trapped antiatoms in 2012. In 2013, the ATRAP
experiment announced the first direct measurement of the antiproton’s
magnetic moment with a fractional precision of 4.4 parts in a million.

Nah, smoking is very unhealthy.
But once you get your hands on some serious amounts of antimatter, why
not take inspiration from 'The Doomsday Machine' and create a planet killer!
Oh, wait.... That might be unhealthy also.....

People do a lot of unhealthy things. As long as they do them to
themselves, it's really none of your business.

Now when they do such things to OTHERS, especially the helpless, that
makes it EVERYBODY'S business.

You know, like this:

"Israel's chief rabbinate says oral suction at circumcision is
preferred"

The practice of "metzitzah b'peh", in which blood is sucked orally
from the circumcised penis, is under scrutiny in Germany, due to a
complaint filed against a Berlin rabbi for allegedly committing bodily
harm during a brit milah.

Homosexual pedophilia at its finest.

How can they NOT be "G-d's Chosen"?

LOL.

-.-

Metzitzah B'peh

I tend to agree, but there are added problems.

Firstly, in many places your taxes are wasted to help people who make
stupid decisions, for example health services for people who CHOOSE to
smoke, rescue services for people who CHOOSE to climb a mountain, etc.
Public taxes should not be used for these purposes, the people who
choose to do those things should pay for any consequences themselves.

Secondly, the people doing stupid things often cause damage to innocent
bystanders. For example a drunk driver or idiot trying to escape the
police crashes into an innocent road user or pedestrian.

The point of where to draw the line in interferring in what people do
is difficult to establish ... although in 99% of cases, the
policitcally correct fools are way over the line.

I also tend to agree here.
However, I also think that these services, like justice, should be
blind. The principle of solidarity with all should be upheld. It is the
foundation of society.

Indeed. Jail time for those I'd say.

The trouble is that life consists out of a lot of gray areas.
Things might indeed not always be clear and humans, imperfect as they
are, can make mistakes. On either side of that vague line.
Society has people (we hope) that are qualified to make that judgment
call. I try not to be the first one to throw stones.

Or, now that antimatter has been found, a bit more experimentation might
lead to the discovery of anticancer, which would heal/annihilate the
various forms of cancer!!

Since we are now into politics...

Applying that to social and moral situations, what about those who
deliberately live beyond their means with no intentions of ever paying
back their debts and then declare personal bankruptcy? Laws have been
tightening on that but then you hear of the new IRS "forgiveness"
where backtaxes can be completely forgiven ten cents on the dollar.

However, when an overpaid CEO sails his company into the rocky shore
and bankrupts the company, throwing thousands out of work and
threatening the entire national economy, suddenly THEY are "too big to
fail" and MUST be rescued.

Conservatives rally all day long against welfare for the individual as
if it is worshipping Satan himself.

So Corporate Welfare = GOOD; Personal Welfare = BAD.

Conservatives never see the irony in how billions freely given to bad
companies is good yet billions that might make people in bad
situations productive is good.

I blame conservatives for not being conservative. Under Bush they
grew the government more than ALL Presidents in the past COMBINED and
strapped us with a phony war debt we will NEVER repay.

Either way, you throw the dice. Yet the rich's dice are always
weighted by the legislation they write for Congress and is passed
unread.

BTW: didn't Bush's unfunded Iraq war cost the country about $17
TRILLION about now? Think what could have been done with that money
had the military and the President been worth a fuck on 9/11.

And don't get me started on Bush's TARP bailout that Obama bobbed his
head and continued.

The rich get what they want because they are HOLY. The poor just
deserve to die because they didn't choose to be born rich with Daddy's
money.

I was thinking about the leap from 'antimatter' to 'anticancer'.
That sounds completely ridicules.

Cancer *IS* Matter.

I you have antimatter you already have 'anticancer'. But I would not
recommend using antimatter to cure cancer. When antimatter comes into
contact with matter, things go *BOOM*.

BTW, as a fan of fundamental science I think the pursuit of knowledge
for knowledge sake is worthwhile. It can expand our understanding of the
universe. Knowledge = Good. Ignorance is not bliss.

And expanding knowledge is also a fundamental part of the mission of the
crew of the Starship Enterprise! :-)

Later on it can produce technology that can help the world as a side
effect.

It is the use (or misuse) of that technology (and/or which end of that
technology you are on) that determines if the effect is good or bad for
you. :-)

Whoops!
Sorry about that.
Sometimes I hit the send button way too soon. Very sloppy I admit.

The most common problem atheists have is in their confusing God with
"religion". God is not religion, and religion is not God. In fact,
atheists are some of the most fanatically religious people on the
planet. Their religion is one of the most rigid and exclusionary of
all religions, as they regularly demonize, shun, and disparage all
others who do not abide by the tenets of their belief systems and
practices.

Religion is not simply a set of beliefs in a supernatural power, but
is a rigid code of ethics and philosophy, based upon a specific system
of belief, practices, or values even resembling, or suggestive of such
a system of belief. Atheists often complain about others "pushing"
their religious beliefs upon them, yet are some of the pushiest people
on the planet when it comes to their own belief system, which they
often promote quite religiously.

Here's a little food for thought . . .

What is time? What is its nature? When did time begin? What happened
before that?

How big is outer space? Where does it end? When you get to the end of
outer space, what's on the other side?

If you atheists are not wise enough to answer these questions fully
and accurately, then you are certainly not wise enough to positively
and unequivocally make the great and final pronouncement upon the
eternal question of whether God does, or does not, in fact, exist.

Atheists are people who don't give a flying fuck about stupid-assed
religions like yours and everyone else's and don't judge people based on
others' beliefs unlike stupid religious people who do.

The Anti-Semite Position on Jews

Anti-Semites take the position on the Jews that no other race in this
world over has ever come to the defense of one of their own racial
kinsmen so fanatically when a truly heinous crime is committed by one
of their own coreligionists against someone outside their
ethnoreligious community like the Gentile Mary Phagan.

Modern Anti-Semitism

In the eyes of the Anti-Semite, the Jews are perhaps the most tribal,
racially conscious, subversive, treacherous and perfidious race this
world has ever seen; Jews are metaphorically seen as the equivalent of
mosquitoes, bed bugs and leeches in human physical form, and with high
levels of sentience and intelligence. Moreover, for the Anti-Semite
the Jews are seen as an awakened and highly conscious parasite or
virus with high levels of ethnoracial xenophobia, but at a detrimental
cost, Jews also suffer from extreme self-deception and mental myopia
in terms of being unable to understand why they are so despised over
the centuries and millenia for their nation wrecking subversive
behavior across the world. Anti-Semites often cite Aesop's fable of
the scorpion and the frog, as perfectly describing the essence of the
Jew on the genetic, spiritual and mental level.

Post Human Anti-Semites

Futurist Anti-Semites believe Armageddon, the final war, before the
singularity comes, will be waged between the global planetary host
(Gentiles) and the global planetary parasite-virus (Jews) sometime in
the 21st century. It will be the final battle to see whether or not
the host (Gentiles) or the virus (Jews) will rule the world before the
age of post humanism and Human Genetic Engineering.

Just because someone calls themselves a "religious person", or a
"Christian", it doesn't mean they are one.

cough-John Hagee-cough

Warmongers do not believe in God. If they did, they would not be
warmongers. Anyone can call themselves a Christian. If you call a
dog's tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? He still only has
four. Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it one.

Those who do evil in the name of Christianity are most likely
atheists, crypto-Jews, or other enemies of Christ who are trying to
shame and discredit the Christian faith.

A tree is known by the fruit it bears. Calling a briar bush an apple
tree does not get you any apples.

I really find it laughable, though quite pathetic, that atheists are
actually far more religious and intolerant than most any others they
attempt to criticize. They not only have a rigid belief system, flawed
as it is, but are zealously religious about it to the point of gross
hypocrisy, demanding that all others follow them or be ostracized.
