A site tells me I need to upgrade to Flash 11.5 to view their material ....
and since I have 10.5.8 on a PowerPC Quicksilver 2002 Dual 1GHz ... no joy.

What is the solution?

I searched the G3-G5 group and see the trails of Flash dismay ...

Try this: <https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2016390/FPforFBPPC.zip>

It's a hacked Flashplayer plugin pretending to be a newer version.
It worked on my G5 iMac, G4 Powerbook and many others. It doesn't work with every site that requires a newer version of Flash but it does with most.

What is the source (site) for this? I believe I have seen it before ...

It's "been around." It's a Flash 10.1 with a hacked version number, which
does seem sufficient for many sites, but it still suffers from the bugs and
security issues of that version.

Flash needs to die.

This hack worked for me. I wanted to be able to listen to Pandora
internet radio....before installing the hack on my DA G4 running
10.4.11, Pandora showed me the door....after the hack, they were much
more cooperative.

Emulate Windows !

Apple in it's wisdom alienates its most loyal core of users and caters to
the antithesis of Apple fandom. All in one fell swoop.

Brilliant marketing ploy !

If you ain't got the dough Apple does not want you using their machines.
Even the ones you bought and paid for.
the best is only for those who can ante up.

If Flash can be hacked to spoof 11.1 there should be a way to spoof
11.5. Still may not work but worth a try, maybe?
Anyone know the details
of the hack? --glen

If you command-click on the flash plugin and select Show Package Contents, and go into the Contents folder you'll see two files, version.plist and info.plist. You need those to be altered to show correct 11.5 version numbers; This is from the version plist file:

<string>Adobe Flash Player 11.4 r402 Copyright (c) 1996 Adobe Systems Incorporated. All rights reserved</string>

<key>CFBundleShortVersionString</key>
<string>11.4.402.287</string>
<key>CFBundleSignature</key>
<string>MOSS</string>
<key>CFBundleVersion</key>
<string>11.4.402.287</string>

Etc. You need to replace this with a valid version number for 11.5, whouch would entail looking at the corresponding files in a real 11.5 plugin.

They're just text files, and can be edited in any text editor. If you have the developer tools installed you can use the plist editor, as well.

Wow, I must have missed it when Apple bought Adobe.

This is the most absurd stretch to slag Apple I've seen in a long, long time.

Apple slags itself every time it makes decisions that effect users of
expensive and powerful machines that are not really that old.

Say what you will I believe some others here agree. It does not take that
much to play flash files. Why does it have to be such a struggle?

Why bring Adobe into it ? What next, question ever other web accepted file
protocol Apple does not wish to support for old machines. That will be a
growing list daily don't you think ? A strange attitude for anyone who
supported Motorola machines for so far back. Keeping old Macs as viable as
possible is what this list is all about.

Since when is telling it like it is verboten here ? Apple supports Windows
users and caters to their needs better than their own customers of long
standing. Some will agree. Other not agree. Simple.

Gee, I don't know why I dragged Adobe into it...

"Adobe Flash Player 11.4 r402 Copyright (c) 1996 Adobe Systems Incorporated. All rights reserved"

Look, it's Adobe's decision not to support PPC and older OS'es, not Apple.

Apple Employees went off and built Killer Apps for Macs.

One might even say Adobe Apps sold more Macs than any WORD for Mac ever
could

Steve never forgave them.

I'm using the hacked version which is the final PPC version that was
advanced to an artificial version 11.1.102.55.

I tried changing just the version.plist & info.plist to 11.5.502.124
and this didn't work, it still identified in Adobe's "About Flash" as
11.1.102.55, and wouldn't work with sites that require 11.5. Then I
dug deeper, and there were further .plist files buried in there that I
also changed. These deeper .plist changes resulted in the plugin
identifying in OS X at 11.5.502.124 but not in "About Flash" or any
11.5-only websites.

So I dug deeper, using HexEdit to open all the files and search for
"55" the final two digits of the hacked version #. Since the real
version wasn't this hacked version, I figured any reference to the
hacked "11.1.102.55" would also need to be changed. There were many
"11.1.102.55" references within several files. All were changed, and
the result was that "About Flash" showed "nothing" and no video would
play at all. I suspect the problem may have been the "124" of my new
version is three digits long compared to the "55" of the other
version? There doesn't appear to be any checksum within the flash
plugin, so I'm thinking I'll try again and see if I can get something
working with an 11.5 version #.

I finally created a newer version of Flash Player that works and
identifies itself as 11.5.502.11 in About Flash. It plays with most
sites, but still won't play with the BBC site. I simply switched all
the references from 11.1.102.55 to 11.5.502.11 and repaired
permissions. I think as Bruce has said, if the site requires features
that aren't present in the older Flash it simply won't work. I'm
uncertain if there is any advantage to a newer fake version?

Agreed,

Missing iTunes radio on 10.4.11 and PCI Macs when Apple dropped support, I tried Pandora as a substitute. No go because of the unsupported Flash version in 10.4.11 --until today-- with the above hack and Safari 4.1.3.Pandora works.

It does not work with Ten for Fox but that is not a problem. I like some background music when working so I just crank up Safari and Pandora for music and use Ten for Fox for the important stuff. --glen

Let's put it another way: there would be no additional *dis*advantage. It's
no more insecure than what it already is, and if it lets certain sites work,
then it's a bonus. But I think our time is better spent looking for Flash-free
alternatives, much as the non-x86 Linux community has done.

Another way corporatism divides society. As though FB and Google are not
doing enough to separate
the patricians from the plebs.

I am using the latest version of TenFourFox (just updated
yesterday..) on my Dual Processor DA running 10.4.11 and since
installing the Flash Hack that we have been discussing, Pandora is
playing on my system.

So if someone would make a version which reports itself as
11.5.502.110 (current Mac version of Adobe Flash), I may be ok?

How is that done again? Some type of text editing program and the
Flash Player.plugin file?

I would be willing to try.

I should make a polite reminder: because Mozilla has removed Carbon and
QuickDraw API support from plugins in Firefox 18+, TenFourFox 19 and any
subsequent versions will no longer be able to run Flash even if you have
it enabled through the undocumented about:config switch. The 17.x series
will be the last ones that can even *run* plugins, even in their
unsupported state.
