Subject: How important is the sound feedback when playing video-games ?

I would like an experienced arcade video games player to answer
the following questions:
How important is it to have a sound feedback when playing a
video game ? More precisely, if the sound is suddenly cut off
when a champion is playing, how badly his performances will be affected?
If it is difficult to play without the sound, is it just because
you are not used to it, or is it because of a more intrinsic role?
Thanks in advance,
Philippe Aigrain
