Why does Mail sometimes change my attachments to embedded images? I'm
trying to send some JPEGs of about 3.5 MBs each, but I have received a
complaint that each one has been converted to a 640 x 293 pixel
thumbnail "inserted as pictures." How do I ensure my recipient
receives the full-size images?

Don't know which version of Mail you are using, but check under the
Edit Menu for Attachments. Which option is checked?

Yes, which version of mail? I am using 2.1.3 under 10.4 and there is
an option for image size in the bottom right corner of the compose
window once you add a picture. Make sure that is set to actual size.
I took a quick look and I did not see where to set the default image
size in Mail's preferences.

The 640 x 293 is pretty close to the medium. so it may be sizing
things down to that.

Besides what has already been suggested, it might be Mail considers those
images too big.
You could try compressing them (one by one, or in a single folder/file), and
attach them as ZIP files. Mail shouldn't mess with ZIP attachments.

Every version of Mail I've used has had some means of setting the size of an attachment. I believe Mail tries to be 'smart' and limit sizes to a 'manageable range' by default

IIRC, since 10.4-ish, there's been a small dropdown menu at the top of the body when an attached image is present, allowing you to choose small, medium, large and 'original size'. This applies to all attachments.

That said there has been seven versions of Mail to date, always specify the version and/or OS X version when you post a question, because the actual answer may vary depending on the version.
