for the PET. It originally came out on the 2001, then was modified to
also work on the 4016 and 4032. It was 100% machine language and at
the beginning it showed you how to build a d-to-a sound output device
that would connect to the parallel port. It was a very good game -
with many of the same features of the arcade version. There were no
opening credits - eg "written by so-and-so." Does anyone know who
wrote that original game?

Thanks .. just curious.

Most likely Commodore wrote it. Later they had Space Invaders on the VIC-
20, C64, and the Plus/4 as Avenger. It seems like they used it as a demo
title to show off the capabilities of each new computer that was released
(the C128 didn't get a version of Avenger since you could just play the C64
version on it).

Ok thanks - that makes sense since it was so well written. Strangely
though they had a schematic diagram at start-up that showed you how to
build an external sound box - so that would be like Commodore
admitting that their hardware needed external enhancements.

I disagree here. I've found that Commodore had inferior programmers.
Heck, most of the stuff they released was written in BASIC or very
rudimentary machine language. I could almost understand on machines
like the VIC-20 and C64 since they probably didn't have a lot of time
to write demos for it before it hit the market. But I remember my
C128D had a demo that was written in BASIC and it was very primative.
If they had employed some of the demo-coders from the day, the
machines may have sold better.

I've always thought it either came from Europe or Japan - leaning
toward Japan, after reading in On the Edge about how there were some
hot shot ML games programmers there. Most American co's would be
plastering their name all over it.

Many PET games were BASIC early on, with a rare few ML ones, near the
end of the PET era you see the better ones. PET Space Invaders was
pretty early (I think I first saw it in 1979).

Uh, inferior programmers for the PET 2001 and
PET 4032? I don't think so. If you were programming
for those machines, you were one of the pioneers.

Probably the game was written as a showpiece for the upgrade ROM PETs, just
like Avenger was later.
