out kill me if I spent $800 on a hard drive for the Commodore. Plus, I
have heard that it is nearly impossible to find an Lt. Kernel and CMDs
are rare.

You might want to investigate some of the product's and programs
available to use an old PC as a file server for the C64. Many of those
kind of things have been around for years, and have all the "bugs"
worked out now and work flawlessly.

Your wife will love you , if you use that old 486, holding up the
coffee table for something useful, and spend the money you would have
spent on a CMD ( you would never recieve from Maurice ) -- and get a
new coffee table for her.

The work being done to interface the USB Flash drive is even more
exciting... nice and compact ( and light weight ) and take up little
desktop space.

I've owned two CMD HD's and a Lt. Kernal hard drive during this past
year, so neither are IMPOSSIBLE to find. It's true that they're not
plentiful, but they are still out there. I got the Lt. Kernal in
trade for one of the CMD HD's. Unfortunately, due to the value of
these drives and being short on cash twoard the end of last year, I
was forced to sell the other CMD HD and the Lt. Kernal. However, I do
hope to be able to get another one again at some point in time.

Of all the hard drives for Commodores, the ones I'd say are
practically IMPOSSIBLE to find are the ICT Data Chief and the original
Commodore 9060 and 9090 hard drives. At least I haven't been able to
find any of these (yet).

First off, I think 64HDD may be a good first option. SD2IEC or MMC2IEC
can also be considered a Hard Drive. Ultimate 1541 will no doubt grow
to incldue a std HD based operation, as everything else is there.

There is also the X-IDE work, which aims to interface an IDE drive to a
1541 using a daughterboard.

Hallo Joviyach,

What about a few dollars?
http://www.baltissen.org/images/1541ide8.jpg

You can find more on:
http://www.baltissen.org/newhtm/1541ide8.htm

But be aware, this page is already outdated. At this moment my system
supports up to 12000 images. At this moment I only have troubles with
displaying which images can be found on the harddisk but I hope to
have solved this problem at the end of next week.
Next steps:
- subdirectories
- 16 MB images using original 2 bytes Track/Sector link
- supporting up to 1 TB drives using 4 bytes LBA link
- supporting full 16 bits mode of Jims IDE interface

Does not support 128 mode, not an option for me :-(

Thanks everyone! I will take a look at these. I am really wanting to
get my 64 up and running again, hopefully preserve the software I have
for it. It would be nice to get a BBS up and running eventually as
well. I am quite fond of Andrew's BBS (Cottonwood), it really takes me
back...

Eric Pearson just sent me a zip file that includes documentation, ROM,
and labels for the ICT Mini Chief hard drive. This is the hard drive
that was built inside of a 1571 drive. Included in the PDF file are
instructions that can be used, in theory, to build your own ICT Mini
Chief hard drive with a 1571 drive and the appropriate parts. I don't
personally have the technical know-how to pull this off, and Eric says
he hasn't built his own yet, but he did say that he intends to. For
anyone interested, I've posted this zip file on my website at
http://cottonwood.servebbs.com/wiskow

Ruud, your work is really impressive. Please keep us up-to-date with the
on-going status of your project.

I still have the schematics for an old I.C.T. hard drive. They are over at commodore.coolblogsite.com

I changed the kernell vectors in my vic,so that the machine used ram
as a harddisc. This is used today with SSD drives. But yes there exists
a device that uses the seriel interface to acces severel Gbytes RAM.
And it`s relatively cheap.
