I'm trying to copy some files off of my old Quadra 700 to a Mac Mini and am
stuck. I have the Quadra running System 7.1 and MacTCP 2.0.5. It has an
AAUI-to-Ethernet transceiver connected to a crossover Ethernet cable that's
connected at the other end to my Mini. It also has a working CD-ROM drive.

I read the networking guide at applefool.com/se30 and did my best to follow
its instructions. I played around with the Control Panel / Network, MacTCP,
File Sharing, etc. and thought I had succeeded in sharing the Quadra's
hard-drive but my Mini sees nothing. But I don't really know what I'm doing
and, to be specific, I don't know what to do on Mac Mini side other than
stare at a Finder window and hope a server icon magically appears. On the
Mini I tried pinging the IP address that I had specified in MacTCP on the
Quadra and it timed out.

This has probably been done a hundred times so if someons could point me to
the right website page I would be immensely grateful.

THANKS!

That's the part you need to fix first. If a simple ping won't get through and back, the two machines have no chance of talking to each other.

If you are using a plain crossover cable, then *both* machines need to be set up using *static* IP addresses which are in the same subnet as each other. You should use one of the private-use IP address ranges for this - the easiest one to remember is 10.0.0.0/8. To do this, I suggest:

Mini: address 10.0.0.1, subnet mask 255.0.0.0
Quadra: address 10.0.0.2, subnet mask 255.0.0.0 (or 4278190080 in decimal format)

It doesn't matter what the default route is set to, it won't be needed.

The AAUI-Ethernet adapter, if it's like mine, should have link and activity LEDs on two of its corners. If so, make sure they light up appropriately. The link should come up as soon as both machines' network settings are configured, and the activity light should pulse when you start pinging. If this *doesn't* happen, then there might be something wrong with your cable - it may be better to use a hub or switch and two straight cables.

When you can ping one machine from the other, try the file sharing setup again.

IIRC MacTCP doesn't respond to pings until it gets used by something the first time.

Avoid using a crossover cable if at all possible. Pre-OS X systems had a tendency to revert to LocalTalk if they didn't find a valid Ethernet connection at startup.

I have a IIci that I have directly connected to a fast ethernet router. The
router will not link up to the IIci unless I force the port to 10 Mbit/
half duplex. Also, old 10baseT equipment rarely does automatic crossover
requiring you to use a cross over cable. I wonder if this is the same issue
here?

Yeah, that's the way my IIci works too.

Accessing your Quadra (server) from the Mini (client) will be difficult to impossible. OS 7.1 doesn't support AppleShare over IP. Newer versions of Mac OS X don't support using AppleShare over AppleTalk and there are problems with the version that do support it, particularly with older versions of Personal File Sharing such as on System 7.1.

OS 7.1 doesn't support AppleShare over IP as a client.

If you can upgrade the OS to 7.5.3 then you can install an AppleShare over IP client.

You could use an intermediate computer to accomplish the transfer.

You could setup the Mini to serve FTP then run Anarchie or Fetch on the Quadra to upload the files.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm not sure I understand all of what everyone
said but this gives me a couple of ideas to pursue. I'm sure I'll be back
with more questions.

It sounds like the odds are low of getting it to work straight away with a
crossover cable but it won't take much time to trying a local IP address
and looking at the transceiver's status lights - so that's what I'll start
with. If that fails then I suppose I'll try to find a small hub to avoid
using a crossover cable and then try 7.5.3.

By the way, am I overlooking an easier alternative for getting the files
off of the Quadra? There's no gadget that makes a thumb drive recognizable
to the Quadra, is there?

Thanks!

just ftp the files back and forth.

start a ftp server on the mini
then log into it with transmit for mac or something.

i know that works good because i do it all the time.

If one exists, it'll be rare and expensive. Your Quadra predates the iMac (and thus the beginning of mainstream USB support) by over 5 years, and the OS has virtually no support for hot-pluggable devices as a result.

The reverse solution - attaching your Quadra's SCSI disk via USB to the Mini, would be viable... *if* USB-to-SCSI adapters that were worth jack were easier to find. There seems to be something about attaching an entire SCSI bus over a hot-pluggable medium that gives reputable manufacturers hives.

Frankly, Ethernet is virtually the only technology that the two machines share in common. You'll be best off persevering with that. Get TCP/IP up and running, start an FTP server on the Mini, and use Fetch to send files from the Quadra.

No USB for Quadras so no options for flash. The problem is that between the Mini and the Q700 there is no common ground in hardware other than Ethernet. So you either need to use Ethernet or an intermediate computer.

Another option is to ZIP the file(s) then e-mail them to yourself.

You can use the Basilisk II 68k Mac emulator.
http://basilisk.cebix.net Set it up to emulate an 040 CPU and it can run
Mac OS 8.1, which can read and write HFS Extended but can't boot from
it. I've used it with Zip drives, Magneto Optical, floppy disks, and
other media. Once on Windows 98SE I had it working with an IDE hard
drive in HFS Standard format but an update to the VIA chipset IDE driver
nuked the drive and I never bothered to try that again.

The emulator may be able to work with real SCSI hard drives. I used SCSI
and ATAPI Zip drives with it. (It had issues with the IDE version of the
Zip 100.)

There's an OS X build for Mountain Lion and later which supports
AppleTalk so you could connect the emulator to the Quadra 700 to copy
the files over, then use the option in Basilisk II to use a host system
folder as a virtual drive to copy the files to - getting them into the
"real world".

Given a sufficiently fast host, Basilisk II is faster than any real 68k
Mac and can be faster at running 68k software than some PowerMacs. I
used to run three way BOLO battles with a IIci running a 66Mhz Turbo
601, one of those "fat Color Classic II" style Performas, and Basilisk
II running on Windows 98SE on a 300Mhz Pentium II. Basilisk won most of
the time, the Power IIci often won, the "Performa-less" nearly always
got stomped. IIRC the only way the Performa had a hope of winning was to
have it use Spielborg and the other two running simpler BOLO Brains.

If you could find a SCSI memory card reader for cheap... The only
current, new ones I've found are aimed at the music synthesizer market
and start at around $150. Ouch.

If you can find a Minolta CD-10 that might be a lot less expensive. It's
a SCSI PC Card (PCMCIA) adapter. You'd then need a PC Card to SD Card or
Compact Flash adapter to be able to transfer to a media you'll be able
to find a USB card reader for.

More likely to be findable is a SCSI Zip 100 (dunno if the Zip 250 was
made in SCSI) and a USB Zip 100 and a pack of disks. But that comes with
the issue that the disks can get tears in their edges, tears which can
rip the heads off the Zip drive, which if you don't notice it will then
rip the edges of other Zip disks.

It would be *possible* to create a NuBus USB card, but nobody, not even
some lone genius hacker, has ever bothered to do so. They'll make
fantastic things like an IDE controller that plugs in between a Z-80 CPU
and its motherboard for old CP/M systems and an enhanced FPGA version of
the TMS9918A Video Display Processor with VGA output for the TI-99/4A,
Colecovision game console and MSX1 computers (and any other device using
that chip) - but not something so handy and useful as a USB card for the
much more common NuBus bearing Macintoshes.

Heck, there has even been a SmartMedia and USB combo card made for the
TI-99/4A, though the DSR software has never really been made to do
anything useful so that hardware isn't actually usable for much.

What really surprised me was the "Eh, whatever." attitude the entire
Macintosh industry had toward supporting USB 2.0 on Mac OS 9. They just
flat out refused to even consider working on it, not even with offers of
money for the drivers. Nor would the open source freeware community.
They just preferred to sit there grumping about nobody writing USB 2.0
drivers for OS 9.

A major reason for that is that driving USB host hardware is actually pretty complicated. I don't even pretend to understand most of what's required, and I'm the sort of "lone genius hacker" who might potentially be interested in such a project. I'm sure everyone remembers the Win98 demo where BillG plugged a USB scanner in and promptly got a BSOD.

USB 2.0 support on MacOS 9 would have been especially low priority because all USB 2.0 hardware works just fine if you drive it as USB 1.1 hardware - just about 40 times slower, ie. at USB 1.1 speeds. Typically a Mac has OHCI controllers for USB 1.1, and *if* it is USB 2.0 hardware, there is also an EHCI controller which takes care of that part. If you already have OHCI drivers, you have working hardware - and experience would have shown manufacturers that writing robust OHCI drivers was quite hard enough thank you.

(NB: I have one PC on which I've had to disable the EHCI controller because the USB hardware is unstable at USB 2.0 speeds. As far as the OS is concerned, only the USB 1.1 controller exists, and that's fine.)

At this point, the easiest way to get a USB controller onto a NuBus card is to graft a NuBus connector onto a Raspberry Pi or something, run a proper modern OS on it (Linux) that already understands all the fiddly bits of USB, and then have it emulate a 5380 chip and present the USB disks as being on a SCSI bus. Even then, you probably have to build glue logic to ensure the R-Pi can talk NuBus properly - possibly even using a real 5380 and having the R-Pi just bit-bash SCSI on its GPIO pins, at which point you don't actually need to put it on a NuBus card any more, just attach it to the main SCSI bus.

Rats. Still no luck.

On the Mac Mini, I set the IP address to 10.0.0.1. On the Quadra, I set the
IP address to 10.0.0.2 in MacTCP (but it changed it to 10.0.0.33 for some
reason). In MacTCP I had to choose a Class A IP address - is that correct?
Also, it gave me a choice of "EtherTalk (0)" and "Ethernet". Neither seemed
to work but I don't understand what the difference is and didn't pay close
attention to which I was choosing.

The green LED on the transceiver lit up and the orange LED would flicker
occasionally but not in response to me trying to ping it from my Mini. And
ping always timed out.

At this point I guess my options are:
1. Upgrade the Quadra to 7.5.3. I'm reluctant to do this because if the
installation goes wrong I may not be able to get it to boot at all. Then
I'd really be stuck.
2. Buy a SCSI to USB adapter cable. The ones I've found seem to be designed
to allow old SCSI peripherals to be connected to new computers via the new
computer's USB port. I don't think using it in reverse to connect a new USB
memory stick to an old computer would work but maybe someone knows
otherwise.
3. Buy a memory card reader that has a SCSI interface. I'm worried the
Quadra wouldn't have the drivers needed to talk to such a device. Plus,
they're pretty expensive as others have already noted.
4. Buy a 1.44MB floppy disk peripheral with a USB connector. These are
cheap in comparison. It would mean *laboriously* moving files off of my
Quadra one at a time.

I'm still puzzled why ethernet can't be made to work under 7.1. This link
makes it sound like people have gotten it to
work: http://www.applefool.com/se30/

Actually I guess the other option is to get a switch/hub and take the
crossover cable out of the configuration - I think I'll try that next.

Any other suggestions would be very welcome!

Thanks.

I have to transfer files daily from my Quadra 650 to a USB stick. I have it connected to a G3 iMac running OS9.2.2. I use a AAUI Ethernet adaptor on the Quadra and a Ethernet cable to the iMac. On the Quadra choose Ethernet in the Network pane then In Chooser on the Quadra will be the iMac volume, click on it and it mounts on the Quadra desktop. You cannot do this AFAIK on any later system than OS9' A G3 iMac can be had for real cheap now days. I have several and a few Quadra's too:-)

You're quite right - and that's not what you'd use it for.

What you would do is use it to attach the Quadra's hard disk to the Mini. You may be able to mount it there straight away, or else you could take a disk image of the entire drive and work with it subsequently - using an emulator, perhaps.

It's possible to put any native SCSI Mac into "target disk mode" by the following method:

1) Start with both computers switched off, and connected with a SCSI cable. There must be no conflicting SCSI IDs between the two machines (since you're using a USB adapter, that's a given).

2) Boot the "target" Mac (your Quadra). AS SOON AS you hear the startup chime, and BEFORE the screen lights up, hit Command-Power or the Programmer's Switch. The Mac should then make a "crash" sound (which varies by model) and display the Sad Mac - but crucially the hard disks inside are now powered and the SCSI controller is deactivated. (Don't worry, a normal boot later will still work.)

3) Boot the "host" machine (your Mini with the USB adapter) normally. This will now take control of the SCSI bus.

4) Don't switch off the target machine before shutting down the host - or at least unmounting the drives first. Treat it like an external SCSI disk.

"EtherTalk" is is MacIP over Ethernet, ie. IP over AppleTalk over Ethernet. "Ethernet" is IP over Ethernet, ie. conventional IP networking.

It shouldn't change your IP address like that. Make sure your mask is set to 255.0.0.0.

Also, make sure you restart the computer after making changes, MacTCP required that.

No, it can only connect the USB to a host (computer).

It can but I and others have covered the limitations. For AppleShare, 7.1 and 10.X are just too far apart.

Make it a hub, many 10BaseT Ethernet cards of that vintage had trouble connecting to auto speed sensing ports. Most switches have auto sense ports, few hubs do.

I don't know what operating system the Mac mini is running but if it's
anything more than 10.4 you will never be able to connect to it over AFP.
Period. And that requires 7.5.3 at the minimum. There's a chart on the
beginning of the AFP Ethernet Networks section that shows what you can
connect to. Also I don't know why OT 1.1.2 and 1.2.x are brought out on a
regular basis -- seriously, MacTCP 2.1 is so EASY to set up and it just
*works*.

MacTCP Class is supposed to be C. A and B are only used for very exotic
circumstances. In MacTCP 2.1 the dialog was trimmed of fat such as the
Class. Use the Ethernet setting.

Avoid half-measures like fiddling with Zip disks, CD-Rs, SCSI -> whatever
adapters and floppies. Trust me. Networking, unless you're stuck with 19200
or 38400bps over ZTerm or pseudo-PPP dialup, is infinitely better. Try to
stick to AFP if you can -- it is faster than all the other processes and is
more reliable. It's about twice as fast as FTP -- there's a section on data
transfer speeds in the More Info page.

lol nice edit job on your video…

anyways.
I suggest just FTPing the files over… that works much better.

just "Share" or Setup FTP on your OSX or what ever box , go to the vintage mac with ethernet connected up.
type in the ftp server ip and drag and drop with transmit or something of the like.
main.system7today.com

** make sure you either have a static IP set or make sure your vintage mac is getting an ip from your DHCP server

Something about this does not seem right.

I took an LCII, which eventually stopped working for some reason, with
System 6 and System 7, along with my PB Duo 2300cTB which had 7.5.3, from
10.3.0 through 10.3.1, 10.3.2, 10.3.3 etc all the way up to 10.3.9 and
could NOT mount anything on it that didn't have OT 1.3/ASC 3.7.4.

I must launch another investigation! Especially to *MOUNT* a 7.1 system on
a OS X machine that is not 10.2! Doesn't help that I sold the last
UltraDock I have.

If I can't connect to either my NAS (via IP) or G5 with 10.5 via
AppleTalk to remove files from a Classic Mac in question, I have an
Adaptec PCI SCSI card with a 50-pin cable sticking out through an
extra card slot in the back. That, and a standalone power supply with
a Molex connector (like the type that ship with USB-SATA adapters) and
I can get anything I need off. Without paying an arm and a leg for one
of the very few USB SCSI adapters I've seen floating around the
Internet, the PCI card is a much more economical solution, and easier
to find. I see them at my local computer thrift store fairly often.

I just sent you an email off the forum. I think. Please reply to it with you zip code and I think I could get an estimate from that. Also, UPS or FedEX or USPS what works best for you?

In MacTCP I had to choose a Class A IP address - is that correct? Also, it gave me a choice of "EtherTalk (0)" and "Ethernet". Neither seemed to work but I don't understand what the difference is and didn't pay close attention to which I was choosing.
