Just curious. I'm not expecting to see it until tomorrow, so
I've got room yet to form imagination-based grumblings.

It can't be any worse than ST: Insurrection.

The last Trek film I ever saw, or will see. Those people are NOT
getting any more of my money.

I'm only outraged that they moved the premiere up one night to
Thursday with no warning and I was already committed (or should be,
perhaps)!

Saw it Thursday night. I have only mild outrage about one scene in
particular (which was in the trailer anyway, so it wasn't unexpected,
which muted my outrage even more). The rest was fine; some of it was
even better than fine.

Did they gratuitously take "Target Practice" against the Satellite of
Love? (It was just there minding its own business as Starships zoomed
hither... and yon!)

What the obligatory "Green-skinned alien female" gag (thus making it the
first time in the canon Kirk actually *did*, unless we discount that
this's alternate canon)?

Oh, and for the record, Uhura's first name is unofficially "Nyota", she
tends to flirt with Scotty, and Nurse Chapel was the one with the
unrequited hots for Spock--
Took two minutes to look that up on the fan-Wiki, so not the kind of
thing you can build entire running plot points around.

> The rest was fine; some of it was even better than fine.

Under the circumstances, "Fine" would be inappropriate. :)

(Can we say "Best Darn Feature Trek Since Nicholas Meyer Left", until
Mike and Kevin do their dopey knee-jerk haven't-seen-it Rifftrax because
they want to make imaginary geeks cry?)

Oh, yes, this would be the first green-skinned woman. Unless
she's actually human and just painting herself up for the kinky fun of
it.

Given as Nyota in this movie too; she just keeps it private from
Kirk, who for most of the film hasn't got any position where he can
insist on asking her.

Given the plot setting up that Uhura hadn't even met Scott at
the time the action starts and maybe hasn't exchanged dialogue with him
by the end it's a little soon for her to flirt with Scott. I'd note that
it's also possible for a person to flirt with two different people over
the course of thirty years, particularly when their entire backstories
have been changed.

Also since we don't even see Chapel it's impossible to guess what
she thinks about Spock.

I would be willing to go for 'best Feature Trek since Nicholas
Meyer left', although to be fair that's not putting it up against really
tough competition. It's refreshing seeing a Trek movie made by people
who seemed to actually want to be there making a Trek movie, though: the
sleepwalking through the last couple films is gone.

Still, I would have liked some, you know, establishing shots of
stuff like the New Bridge or the exciting new Ship's Brewery if they're
supposed to be important things we look at. Once again a Big Loud Movie
has forgotten how useful it is to the audience to be able to judge the
relative locations of people and places.

And, hey, Vasquez Rocks again! That was sweet.

No. I'm all in favor of scantily clad green-skinned alien females.

I was referring to the "li'l Kirk drives a Corvette into a canyon in
Iowa after taking a call from Greg Grunberg on his Nokia cell phone"
scene.

I was straining not to make the obvious comparisons to the same opening
of Disney's "Treasure Planet". ^_^

I've just seen "Star Trek" in IMAX. I liked the film, but I wouldn't
necessarily recommend seeing it in the IMAX format. The scenes in space
looked great, but it seems that the director is quite fond of extreme
close-ups. That may the OK for regular sized movie screens, and it may
play well on DVD. But on a big IMAX screen, those close-ups produced
Mount Rushmore sized heads with pores large enough to shoot basketballs
into. In this format, each actor's five o'clock shadow became quite
apparent. After seeing so many bad shaves up close, I dubbed the film
"Star Trek: the Wrath of Razor Burn".

Never underestimate that the future generation is too young to have
heard of box-office grosses, and the kids in our house now ASK to see
"Hercules" and "Treasure Planet" on DVD.

That one PDA scene that takes place on a transporter platform? I
guess they'll have to add a button that drops a Remote-Operated
Obscuring Macrozone over the relevant area!

That movie was: The Beginning of the End (with Peter Graves). As I recall,
one of their comments was "this is sooo NOT Illinois". I'm guessing the
actual filming was done somewhere in the San Fernando Valley, Ojai, or
Thousand Oaks, CA. The terrain certainly looks familiar.

"The Rebel Set" also had mountains in Illinois (or, at least, portions
of Wisconsin or Indiana that one could easily get to from Chicago while
waiting for a connecting train).

Hey, I saw it too. Disney Channel Southeast Asia for some reason
figured it should run _Treasure Planet_ even more than it ran _Monsters
Inc_ or _Dinosaur_, if you can imagine.

They really under-applied the hover and force field technology,
as I see it. At a minimum they could have had a flying Corvette.

Still, the whole car-ruining scene was very important to the plot
what with how it established ... uhm ... that important plot point that
it did, I suppose.

And the _Star Trek 2009_ canyon was in this case some sort of
industrially-dug hole --- in the longer glances you can see it's a
rectangular hole with a basically flat bottom --- where, I suppose the
soy of the future is mined to become the starships of today.

Ah, but you see, it's only a black hole because of the red matter.
