Sorry to be so late with this post....I take after my mother's
side of the family when it comes to doing things when scheduled/
happened. My dear Italian dad had some of Mussolini's passion for
making the trains (and everything else) run on time.

The point is, I finally experienced the new millennium version of
MST offered by Joel, Trace, Frank, Mary Jo and Josh. Their live tour
hit Boston last month and I attended the show on February 20th, which
is Joel's birthday (and if you want to feel old, Joel Hodgson is now
59 --not that he looks it). The venue was the Somerville Theater
(which made the news this week when U2 gave a special intimate concert
there).

The show opened with a comic performance by Gruber, as in "The
Higgins Boys and", not to mention the guidance counselor on FREAKS &
GEEKS--complete with musical accompaniment by Josh. Then the main
feature....the crew took on a charming little creation called CURSE OF
THE VAMPIRE. This movie was set in 19th century Mexico, but filmed in
the Phillipines with locals (including actors in blackface as
servants) I was transported back in time to the bright and shining
days of MST--I couldn't stop laughing at the riffs, some contemporary
but most as timeless in their relevance. In addition, they threw in an
encore of a clip film of the best moments from other TITANIC
productions, as well as a birthday cake and singalong for Joel.

Do I need to say the fun didn't stop there? Of course I waited in
line for over an hour for the meet and greet, where I got Joel, Josh
and Frank to add their autographs to my Episode Guide, gave Joel a
personal birthday greeting...and was amazed to find that none of them
were aware of MANOS being used in that episode of HOW I MET YOUR
MOTHER. Plus I discussed with Gruber my belief that GILMORE GIRLS
creator Amy Sherman-Pallidino had to be a bit of MSTie herself, with
her first class sense of pop-culture awareness and irreverence--and he
should not, having appeared on an episode where he was unsuccessful in
replacing Grant Lee Buffalo as official troubador of Stars Hollow, the
Connecticut town where the show was set.

All in all, it was the best night I have had in a long time (not
to get into ugly details, but I have been dealing with less than
pleasant things for a while). And it assures me that the spirit of MST
still has plenty of life in it, even if this newsgroup seems more like
the Usenet version of the town in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW.

He especially didn't look as old as he apparently was when he started
MST3K! (I just hope the tenses in that are understandable) ;-)
Maybe he's really Joel MacHodgson, of the CLAN MACHODGSON!

So ... Joel's found the secret of reversing the flow of time?
How Gizmonic can one man be?

I've got six friends outside the group here that I now know
to have gotten to Cinematic Titanic, one in Kansas City, two in San
Francisco, three in Seattle. (The latter set had actually had some
contact with Mary Jo Pehl outside that, as they shared Plan Nine
publishing tables at some conventions; one friend realized concretely
a point about fandom from getting her autograph on a hubcap.) I'm
certainly interested in seeing a live show, but so far they have
inexplicably not put Belmar, New Jersey on their tour schedule. Or at
least Toms River.

Well, we'll just have to see what you're all saying about this
a decade from now.

A miner forty-niner?

However, with our luck the ROBOT HOLOCAUST will happen before then,
and then will we be laughing? I wonder....

P.S. Given the robots moving around the MOOLA during that Ben
Bernanke "60 Minutes" interview, I think they're already into the
FUNDING STAGE! ;-)

No, he's of legal age.

Well, do you mean laughing at or laughing with the robot
holocaust?

Sure, but have we got robots that can move around Ben Bernanke
yet?
