Any problems with the new MST3K DVD box set (XIV), containing Final
Justice, Mad Monster, Manhunt in Space, and Soultaker? What are your
favorite places to buy these sets? Thanks.

-Doug Elrod (dre1@cornell.edu)
Thinks that Google finding "14" when searching for "XIV" is kind of
neat ;-)

No *physical* problem, leaving aside the sheer desperation of Mike-era
riffs on "Final Justice". -_-

Only extra is an interview with producer Greydon Clark (as it seems they
only got FJ as a package-deal rider with "Hobgoblins"), and by now we
pretty much know the rote of "I mean, those guys are having fun, but
it's nice that new audiences are getting to discover an underappreciated
movie again..."

put both sets in the same tin)

No, since I don't own any of the DVDs.

I'll let the group know on Tuesday.

Tom Carberry (#45505, and Mad Monster--that is the bottom of the PD barrel)

Oh, sorry, *and* a Joe Estevez interview, where he basically repeats the
above with "Soultaker"--

(Uh, so fans actually shout, "Hey, Soultaker!" on the street when he
walks by?...Sure, Joe. No, no, that's okay. We believe you. 9_9 )

Why would there be problems?

I got mine from Amazon.com. Reliable service and decent pre-order
price.

Watched all four this weekend, and no problems with any of them. I got them
from Netflix. I forgot just how bad Mad Monster was. I hadn't watched that
one is many, many years. As for Joe Estevez's interview--that was just a
tad cringe inducing.

I haven't yet got my copy, actually. I was too busy the week
the set came out to go to the video stores or the Borders, and since
then I just haven't seen it in the usual haunts. I've been haunting
them less, though, what with my busy work of not being dead.

Sure, but can they find `14' when searching for `fourteenish'?

Joel: "Gee, it's *his* mad-scientist fantasy, you'd think they'd let
him get the last word."

(Which is about the only riff I CAN remember from Mad Monster...)

Joe talking about Soultaker's "contuining cult popularity" is oddly
appropriate, coming on the same boxset as "Manhunt in Space", and Winky
bragging about his love life... 9_9

Yes, that is part of what made me uncomfortable for him. It's ok to be
delusional, but don't commit it to a DVD track for God and everyone to see
(granted it will be a small audience). Manhunt in Space was my favorite of
the four, but I have a bias towards Season 4 (which IMHO was their best--let
the flame wars begin). I would like to see more of Season 1 get a chance,
including Robot Holocaust, The Crawling Eye, and The Black Scorpion. I'm
sure CE and BS have got to be in the PD.

in Season One because it wasn't our best work".)

I've always liked _Manhunt In Space_, and I don't think that's
just because it was among the first episodes that I ever saw in full.

However, showing that a bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing,
my appreciation of the sketch where Joel and the Bots call Winky at
home was spoiled by learning of how Scotty Beckett, who played Winky,
turned out. Yes, I know, the actor isn't the character, and the Brains
were clear about harshing on Winky, but I don't really know the guy in
any other voices.

Oh, I would. If I only were worthy to walk down the same street as
that guy!

Speaking of Encounters with Greatness, there was a piece on ERNEST
BORGNINE, star of the framing-story in "Merlin's Shop of Mystical
Wonders", on "CBS News Sunday Morning" this week! Apparently, he
collects _hats_ from his roles. Does anyone remember if he had one in
MSoMW?

-Doug Elrod (dre1@cornell.edu)
No mention of Borgnine's Coffee Soda, though. Is that still being
made?
