I know in some experiment, possibly a short, Tom Servo answered
some character standing in front of a bland background and singing,
o/` Ed Sul-li-van o/` ... which I took to be one of those many strange
things that just happens.

And then on Turner Classic Movies I came across a moment of the
Dick Van Dyke/Ann Margrock/Janet Leigh vehicle _Bye Bye Birdie_, with a
bit where for some reason the guy who does Mildew Wolf's voice sings an
angel-filled chorus to the notion of appearing on Ed Sullivan.

So now I know what the reference was. And now I've got no idea
which episode it was had the reference.

I think this reflects a conservation law of some kind.

I learned about the concept of "pan and scan" at a very early age,
watching that song from the movie on VHS -- my mother pointed out to me
that only three-fourths of the members of the family were actually
appearing on the TV screen. Presumably that was not an issue on TCM.

Pretty frequently used riff--
QV. Mrs. Claus saying, "Oh, are we on TV?" at the beginning of "Santa
Claus Conquers the Martians"

Can't recall offhand how many times it may have been used in "The
Beatniks", however.

When she thinks of the mass media, she touches herself.
