Got an email this morning that the next Cinematic Titanic is "Santa
Claus Conquers the Martians."
Really?
Is there really a need to go over old ground, with the plethora of bad
movies out there?
Comments?
Kate?

They wanted to do the Christmas Matinee thing again for seasonal
promotion (like RiffTrax doing the Carpenter "Halloween"), but seriously--
It's like redoing "Manos"...They called the original MST3K ep one of
"The Essentials" for a REASON. -_-
(And particularly when there are so many *other* worthy troll-made
Christmas Matinees out of our unexplored collective 60's-70's past, back
when theaters actually showed them on Saturdays--
What about "Christmas That Almost Wasn't"? "The Magic Christmas Tree"?
"Here Comes Santa Claus"? "Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny"?)

Kate, this point is addressed on the Cinematic Titanic website.
While it seems unlikely that they'll substantially *improve* on what
was already an excellent MST3K episode, if they can *equal* it then I
think we can forgive them. :)
If Joel & Co. feel passionately enough about a particular movie that
they want to riff it even though it's been riffed before, I suspect
(hope) that the results will work out pretty well.
I doubt that they have any plans to systematically re-do old MST3K
episodes.

I agree with you Kate. That was my initial reaction when I got the episode
announcement e-mail from CT. The Roger Corman archives contain enough
material to last a life time. I offer for your consideration the following
brief list:
Not of This Earth
Attack of the Crab Monsters
Beast with a Million Eyes
War of the Satellites
The Raven
Tom Carberry (#45505, and a non-Corman guilty pleasure--Frankenstein's
Daughter--with Jack Nicholson's first wife)

A friend who was at one of the live-show presentations of this
said it was great, although given the viewing circumstances it might
have been hard for it not to be a great time. (Santa Claus Conquers
The Martians; Joel and Company; Hundreds of fans; Even one of the
Sklars; what's not to like?)
I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to re-do any MiSTed
movies, particularly ones that were outstanding episodes to start with,
but I suppose it's worth trying the experiment at least. If it turns
out funny, good. If it doesn't, well, the Cinematic Titanic Plan is to
do another 496 episodes, right? They've got room to do things that
don't work out too.
(From the preview/advert/trailer I like the look, though, and
may well buy it if I can convince myself to try this whole 'buying stuff
online' idea.)

I'll forgive them if it's even half as good as the original riff.
A decade and a half, a couple deleted scenes, a couple new writer/
riffers, entirely new jokes, and Erhardt's approval. I'll give it a
shot.
Maybe they'll reriff "Mitchell" and include the John Saxon death
scene.

I was pretty pissed off, I'll still probably buy it though.

It's just not the same, though, when you're *expecting* to see Dropo
MST'ed. ("Ah, Ed Grimley's here.")
You can't make lightning strike twice, especially with only half your
generators functioning.
(Again, though, I'm more PO'ed about all the unexplored
cheesy-Xmas-matinee territory we're NOT getting this year--

Isn't all this what the KTMA diehards said about the Sandy Frank
episodes?

There's a difference between KTMA upgrades, and remaking episodes that
actually *had* scriptwritten riffs and Kevin Murphy-Servo the first time
around...

I'm not pissed, but I don't think I'll buy it.
At least part of the joy of experiencing a new MST-ed movie is
watching the movie itself unfolds.
Thinking back to Mitchell (which I know better than I do SCCtM), could
they really think of new, improved riffing on the "Adam Rich hassles
Mitchell in his car" scene that would be better than the original?
And even if they improved on the jokes during the scene where Mitchell
first shares a beer with Linda Evans, nothing's going to take away
that wonderful first time shock when our hero spills beer on her, or
his gun falls down his pants.
Keep probing the color Filipino action movie genre, I say. How about
something with Sid Haig? Or dig up another 70s movie like "Angels
Revenge." I just saw one with Nancy Kwan that could use a good
riffing!

Plus, I never saw the KTMA episodes (from before the show really
caught on), so for me, all of those Gamera movies, and Fugitive Alien,
and whatever else were brand new.
SCCtM was from the show's prime and an excellent episode.
Anyway... just in case Joel & Trace and those guys actually read this
newsgroup, I'll clarify (for myself anyway, but probably for all of
us): We're glad you're still doing movies; we're just discussing what
kinds of movies would be best.

Fictionally, Joike & the Bots were supposed to be sent the movies
unawares and never knew what they were getting into until they were
trapped in it--
There was always that initial sense of *shock* (even if feigned) when
they'd never encountered a particularly painful and inexplicable movie
before...Could they ever do "Wild World of Batwoman" the same way, being
forewarned ahead of time?

Was the first version a Joel MST3K or a Mike one?
> I was pretty pissed off, I'll still probably buy it though.
How are Cinematic Titanic, quality wise? I've gotten use to Rifftrax
(and now iRiffs), so paying $15 for bad movies will require them to
really be worth it. I probably wouldn't get more of Mike's Film Crew if
he still did them, although those were usually discounted heavily
online...
