(Interestng thing is that unlike Warner's old theme fold-out boxes, the
disks are now individually packaged, with "wacky" artwork--

Could this be ShoutFactory's attempt to bridge their Punky-traumatized
gap between boxsets and individual-disk releases, and we may see the
titles re-released separately later?...Or did they just want to exploit
a few more audience-identification points out of that webcomic thing?)

You know, I kind of like the box covers. Besides, maybe the new box
covers could attract brand new MSTies. Thats how I became a MSTie. I
picked up " The Essentials " box set and said " What the heck is
this?!? " and so began my MSTiehood. Shout!factory could make this
work.

Yeah, but not if they're doing it out of old boxset demons, and trying
to edge their way back into old single disks--

After all, they should be thankful that boxsets are pretty much the ONLY
way they're going to get fans to buy "First Spaceship on Venus" or
"Future War"...

You're new here, right? You may not be aware that Derek's opinions
don't reflect anything other than his opinions, and certainly have no
bearing on what loosely might be called "reality", or even "MST3K
reality".

Anything MST3K-related that he is annoyed by or is otherwise opposed
to is probably going to be considered a good thing by most other
fans. You just need to keep that in mind when reading his stuff.

That is a curious choice. Maybe ShoutFactory got a discount
on slim-size jewel cases. Wasn't their most recent SCTV set done as
a set of slim cases too, as opposed to the cardboard fold-outs from
the previous ones? (I don't think I have other Shout-based DVD sets
so don't know how they usually package things.)

Have they broken up any box sets into single-volume releases
for other shows? (I don't actually know, except that I did see the
SCTV Christmas Spcials released as a separate purchase.) I'd doubt
they'd suddenly start for this. It'd be easier to trust that fans
will buy the quartet even if they dislike one episode than that they
would buy all four separately out of completeness.

Actually, that's what started it:
After bearing the outrageous slings, arrows, and red ink of having to
sell ALL FOUR seasons of "Punky Brewster" on season boxset, Shout
engaged in the usual bit of studio denial/buck-passing/peasant-blaming
and claimed that "Fans must not like expensive boxsets"...
So, after going back and trying to release Punky S1 on broken-up
individual volume disks (yes, *and* the Saturday morning cartoon, too,
as a menu bonus), Shout policy is now officially to play it safe and
make all boxsets individual-release friendly, just in case the usual
imaginary "low sales" make them want to duck out the back door.

Hence the worry about MST3K. (Which were hard enough to find on shelves
back when they *were* still randomly-selected one-disks of "Red Zone
Cuba" and "Wild World of Batwoman".)
In fact, seems like it's only the Anniversary tin and memorabilia-stuff
that kept THIS release as a 4-movie boxset, as if they wanted to leave
it open which way they transition in the future.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll try to remenber that. And I would buy
future war as a single. I personally like The Sci-Fi episodes and
season ten. I'd buy those if I were to buy a single. But, I do like
Season 4 Joel era episodes.

I was not aware that anyone's opinions had exceptionally greater weight
than any other MST3K fan's opinions (aside from matters of superior
experience and Sampo being the official "Secondary Voice of MST3K's
Creators").

Passionately opinionated folks are usually great to visit, but not
always a joy to live with.

I wish the FUTURAMA DVD's (special individual releases after the
official show cancellation) they are putting now in the paper folded
packaging would go the "cheap dollar store DVD packaging" in that the paper
holders are more prone to scratch the royal hell out of the DVDs.

Either that or put them in one of the cheap soft plastic or paper DVD
holders you sometimes see for volume sales packaging and then glue that to
the paper container. Anything so the DVD I am paying $30 for is not getting
scratched by the pretty (dumb) packaging.

Well, it's a common fallacious belief that "all opinions are equal".
The reality is that there are opinions, and then there are informed
opinions. (Alternately you could say that there are opinions, and
then there are useful opinions.)

And IMO, I too would have no problem picking up "Future War" as a
single episode, if that was how it was offered. Of course, I'm hard-
pressed to think of any episode that I would baulk at buying. So
maybe my opinion is not all that useful either. :)

Maybe they were unexpectedly hit by a lawsuit from "MAD", based on
their "Fold-In" technology! I guess they'll just have to walk
carefully now, to avoid something similar from "WACKY PACKAGES"....

It COULD be. I think everyone feels a little traumatized after a
Punky gap....

That may be it. But if one gets too many points out of audience-
identification, the audience might start to feel _exploited_!

You know, the Punky Gap is the only issue I'm really following
in the election this year.

Didn't many of our pioneer forebears embark on the hard journey
through the Punky Gap? They just had to be careful when they
attempted it, or they'd end up wintering in Cannibal Cove!

-Doug Elrod (dre1@cornell.edu)
Based on other episodes I've recently learned about, I wouldn't be
too surprised if they ended up eating Brandon the Wonder Dog, but it
was a Very Special Episode, and so was OK! ;-)
