Attack #1 is a sports(volleyball) manga from 1968!

Earlier today I reposted a L-E notice of attempts to fund the subtitling
of the anime of the same name which ran for two years on Japanese TV 40
years ago. Being gifted or cursed with a great deal of curiosity I
checked at Manga Fox and they have one chapter of this excellent manga.
Well I assume the quality of chapter 1.1 will hold up. The central
character is a young woman who has transferred from an excellent school
in Tokyo to a seaside town where the air is cleaner to live with an aunt
and uncle as she attends the local school. Character design is somewhat
different from modern or even 1980s works.
Below are the notes at Manga Fox.

ATTACK NO.1 Manga
アタックNo.1; Atakku No.1; Mila Superstar; Quella Magnifica Dozzina
Released: Author & Artist Genre(s):
1968 Urano Chikako Drama, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Sports

From Wikipedia:

The story is about Kozue Ayuhara, the new girl who transferred to Fujimi
College, who tried out for the school volleyball team. Her friendship
with Midori would develop, and her talents would impress coach Honga
more and more each day. Though she showcased extraordinary volleyball
skills, she would make enemies with Yoshimura, the star of the current
team. Kozue would discover that being at the top would bring stress,
incompatibilities and other dilemmas into her life. Her high
expectations of becoming the best volleyball player in the school, Japan
and eventually the world, would set the tone for the drama to follow.

The anime (or rather its German-dubbed version, Mila Superstar) used to
be run on German satellite TV in the kid's cartoon slots. It was
repeated in its entirety several times, and I eventually managed to see
all the 104 episodes. As you suggest, it's a very good show of its kind.

Sports manga is a huge genre in Japan and although it's rare, there are few
shojo variety as well.

There are authors that specializes in just one genre. For example,
Mizushima Shinzi of Dokaben is considered the top of baseball manga.
Dokaben began in 1970s but the characters are still around today as they
progressed from high school to professional baseball.

Chiba Tetsuya picks different sports for each of his long series. I just
finished Ashita Tenki Ni Nara and he spent several years covering the main
character's participation at British Open. He has also done boxing (Ashita
No Joe), sumo wresting, kendo, and maybe soccer.

If I want to categorize them, I'd break them down into two types.

One is the "faithful" type where everything is authentic and down to earth.
The story focuses on someone perhaps not very good at the beginning but
eventually thrives because of his/her hard work.

Then there is the second type where it's more fantasy and characters often
does things that is impossible in real life and portrayed as having super
powers. In Kyojin No Hoshi, the main character eventually throws invisible
balls that baffle the batters.

For example, Ring Ni Kakero used to be a straight boxing manga where the
main character, Ryuji, was learning the art from his older sister. It
didn't get past the stage where he only uses left jabs and all of sudden the
author got tired or something and everybody developed super powers! It no
longer resembles anything in real life and all matches are decided with one
super punch in a splash page and the opponent is thrown out of the ring (or
the building) and left unconscious with all their bones broken.

In the recent years, after Fist of Northstar there were an insurgence of
kung-fu manga and there were indeed ones that takes place in more realistic
environments such as Baki the Grappler or Tough.

Then there are manga where sports are merely a backdrop to help develop
romantic rivalries such as many works by Adachi Mitsuri.
