I have a copy of Merlin 128 in zip format.

I haven't been able to successfully transfer to .d71 image and test in
Vice. Haven't tried on real hardware yet.

I don't think I have docs for it.

I had a look at files tonight on archive that I have. The "Merlin"
program file is simple basic loader for some additional files, one of
which is asm1.prg

I don't have this file in the zip.

So, my compilation of Merlin 128 appears to be incomplete.

Sorry.

I think I have Buddy 128 somewhere and will try it out tomorrow night.

Douglas,

I have an original of "Merlin 128" with manual available. Send me a
private email and we'll work out a price. I'm in suburban Kansas City,
zip 66204.

Buddy is available at store.cmdrkey.com.

You get 3 disks plus the printed manual. The disks include both
Buddy 64, Buddy 128, ED-BUD versions for both, plus complete
source code for Buddy so you can make customs mods to it if
desired. Also included is support for the Z80 side of the 128
as well as the ability to assemble code for the Power C package.

This version of Buddy 64 has been fixed to coexist with JiffyDOS
and JiffyMON. Buddy 128 doesn't have a problem with JiffyDOS.

The price is reduced to less than half of when CMD was selling
the package. It's only $20 plus shipping.

(I hope the above ad isn't objectionable. Someone asked about
128 assemblers...)

Buddy was used by CMD ever since the development of JiffyDOS.
All the rom code used in the CMD devices including the SuperCPU
rom were coded with Buddy 64. Buddy works well with all of the
CMD hardware. It can run from the RAMLink, FD, and HD, and it
really speeds up with the SuperCPU.

I just used Buddy 64 to create the VIC-20 JiffyDOS rom.

I've read good things about Merlin 128, but never found a copy.
I used Merlin 64 until I found out about Buddy.
Merlin has a bit of a wacky editing system...and the source is stored
in PRG/tokenized format if I recall correctly.

Buddy is simply way easier to use, and, in my opinion, more flexible.
Plus, support is there from Maurice.

The only negative about buddy 128 that I can remember is that in 80 col
mode, you have two 40 col buffers to work on.
It would be super if there were some way to let you edit source on the
full 80 col screen.
- Any chance of an upgrade Maurice?

Don't let Merlin 64 hinder any thoughts about using Merlin 128.
I agree, the editor in Merlin 64 is very bad, but the editor in
Merlin 128 is quite good.

> - Any chance of an upgrade Maurice?

The source code is included, remember? :)

I forgot, Buddy also comes with an "unassembler".

Someone here mentioned that they used MERLIN 64.
Any 64 assembler can assemble 128 machine code,
or even APPLE or ATARI code as long as the
processor uses the INTEL 6500 instruction set.

I have no experience with MERLIN and only minimal experience
with an old version of BUDDY 128 a few years (decades?) ago. My
version of BUDDY was bundled with a C language compiler as Mr.
Randall stated. The only reasons why I never ported myself over
to BUDDY was inertia, all my code was in MADS and I couldn't find
a way to produce symbolic cross reference maps from BUDDY source
code. Cross reference maps are now passe, they were not even
mentioned in the C course I took at the community college in the
late 1990s. I am sooo old that I desparately depend on X-MAPS.

I tinker with MADS whenever somebody posts an assembly language
problem here. My MADS system is customized so that machine
code can be saved from memory as it's being assembled. I also
implemented a modual that allows access to the C128 numeric
keypad and the RGB screen while in C64 mode. You can get
MADS by downloading the COMMODORE ASSEMBLER from :

http://www.haddewig.de/nogames64/tools.html

Each WEB site modual is one byte longer than
the corresponding modual on my original system
disk. MADS instructions are in the first entry at :

http://project64.c64.org/misc/index.html> :)

I have an original 3.5" MIDNIGHT ASSEMBLER128 system disk
with the MAS 64 user's guide. I never used the assembler.
I got it from Matthew Montchalin, the assembler's author
for free. For a personal $1.50 check sent to the address
below, I will mail all my MAS stuff to any US state location.

I had another look at Merlin 128 tonight, after working out issues of
conversion form DOS zip, truncated long file names, etc, I now have a
working copy of Merlin 128 in .d71 disk format.

No docs however.

The default screen text colour (80 column mode only) really sucks.

I think it is more a question of "downgrading". Older versions of Buddy
use the full 80-column screen.

Thanks for pointing out my error. Maybe I should correct the error on
my resume. It may improve my chances for getting a job. I am looking
for a job as a boss. It's the only thing I am qualified to be.

Do you still have a copy Merlin 128 in .d71 format? Been searching everywhere for it ....

I'd like a copy too. Well, I didn't realize at first that you responded
to a post from 2006...

Anyways, I found a .nib image at gametronik.com which is kind of curious
since as I understand it Merlin 128 came on an 1571 disk that wasn't
copy protected so why nibble it? I don't know if it's complete since
it's D64 sized.

Yeah I noticed the 2006 date.... oh well, it was worth a shot. Yeah it was 1571 for sure, and not copy-protected, so the .nib confuses me too but that is the only one I have been able to see online.
