Planetes (プラネテス Puranetesu?, Ancient Greek: πλάνητες "wanderers"[1][2]) is a
Japanese hard science fiction manga by Makoto Yukimura. It was adapted as a
26-episode anime television series by Sunrise, which was broadcast on NHK
from October 2003 through April 2004. The story revolves around a team of
space debris collectors based in the debris craft Toy Box in the year 2075.

(BTW, NHK is a television station owned by the Japanese government and they
are even willing to fund anime if it's of cultural relevance. I think they
broadcasted Bakuman as well.)

I recent found the first two volumes of this manga and I swear that it is
THE inspiration for the recent movie Gravity.

Taking place in 2070s, the humanity has taken on to outer space and many
people do not ever want to go back to living on the surface. The main
characters are group of "debris cleaners" in charge of removing various
unwanted items from near Earth's orbit. The meteor showers and the debris
things felt almost identical to the main plot of Gravity but as an ongoing
series Planetes was able to flesh out the characters even more.

The series began in 1999 so some of the technologies felt a bit dated but I
really enjoyed it and must track down the rest of the series.
