I have a heck of a time getting PET programs to run properly using
VICE. I admit, I don't have the patience to read the directions, so
part of the problem might be my fault. But, most of the PET games
either won't load, run properly, or simply lock up. It is quite
frustrating and I must admit I've lost patients with VICE for the PET.
The PET game POLICE (one of my favorites from the past), for example,
doesn't work with the VICE Emulator. The chararcters simply fly off
the PET emulator screen and cause the system to lock up. I've tried
every combination of PET-type/memory/drive (whatever) without success.
It has been frustrating.
Please don't view my comments as a knock against VICE or its creators.
My purpose is not to criticize, but to enlighten. My compliments to
the VICE staff for they accomplished no small task. VICE is truely an
impressive program. It is my hope that the experiences set forth by a
computer neophyte (myself) might help to make VICE an even better
program in the future.

Hi,
what version of VICE are you using on which system?
I got POLICE from http://www.portcommodore.com/petfiles.php
and it worked quite fine using
"xpet -model 3032 -8 PETGMS09.D64"
on Linux, where PETGMS09.D64 is the disk image with the game on it.
(then load/run the game as on the real machine - I did not try to
autostart it directly, but that doesn't seem your problem anyway)
On Windows, you should be able to set the model to 3032 via the
menu.

I'm using WinVice 1.21 on a Compaq Presario running Windows XP. I got
POLICE from Commodore.ca. I tried running it in 2001-N, 4032, 8032
modes with various memory settings. I've always had problems. I'll try
3032. But, I don't understand why 3032 would work and 2001-N-32
woundn't? These should be identical machines, right?
Thanks!

Hardware-wise yes. There may be differences in the ROM sets, though.
I don't remember right out of my head whether VICE's 2001-N uses the
version 1 ROM set, where I am sure that the 3032 uses the version 2 ROM
set (the so-called "upgrade ROMs").

I tried POLICE in 3032 mode and it worked just fine like you said. Try
loading POLICE in 2001 mode. In 2001 mode, the problems I metioned
earlier are quite apparent. The character flies off the screen and the
program crashes. Is there any way to know which PET settings to use
with VICE when loading PET programs?
Thanks!

Good to hear :-)

There must be some other problem. I used "vice -model 2001 ..." and it
worked. On Unix there is a ~/.vice/vicerc file with saved settings.
maybe you should try to remove/rename this file for a test. Don't know
how that works on Windows, though.

There is no generic way to see this, sorry. Some programs automatically
detect the PET version themselves, but if the program does not do this
there is no way I know.

On Windows, it's "vice.ini", and it sits in the same "folder" where the VICE
programs are.
