Since a libx11 security update, which entered Debian a few days ago,
vice displays a black screen instead of the emulated screen, due to a
failure with newly introduced input sanitizing in XCreateImage(). I hear
this is not Debian specific, so if you are affected (or just want to
help out), please help test the patch I sent the Debian maintainer.
Details and proposed patch (note that this is for version 1.20):

The same patch *should* work for 1.21 or, at most, require a very small
adaptation, but I haven't gotten around to trying it with 1.21 yet
because that version is problematic for me under KDE. I'll follow up if
I get to it later.
As for what the security patch to libx11 was about, the quickest link I
can provide is the related Debian BTS entry:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=414045
posted to comp.emulators.cbm and mailed to vice-devel.
