VICE Rules (in my humble opinion) It is by far the best C= emulator
ever created for the PC

I tip my hat to the Vice team http://www.viceteam.org for a job
very well done, that just gets better as time goes on.

and, I would like to suggest an enhancement, to an already kick ash
program

We have 4 funtion keys, that are un-used in Vice ( F9 to F12 )

Could it be possible for the Vice team, or someone else, to tweak the
GUI, to make those function keys "macro" keys ?

i.e. User defined function keys. Example hitting F9 would list
the Directory of the current image in drive 8

or maybe some like this:

F9= load "$,8"
F10= load "$,9"

F12= "list"

Thereby..... hitting F9 would load the DIR of drive 8 , and then
hitting F12 would list it, so you could see the filenames to boot an
individual program on the disk in drive 8

I'm not about to even think about tweaking the open source code of
Vice, to make this happen...... Im glad it works , as good as it does
( don't fix it , if its not broke )......... I'm just wondering if
this kind of tweak could be implmented, because it sure would save a
lot of keystrokes

Making User defineable Macro keys, is probably not a project one
should try, other than the Vice Authors....and I know thier time is
limited, and such a project could take many hours....... but...... I
would "think" that with the extensive keybord mapping Vice already
does.... it should't be too hard to just assign a "command" to the
left-over function keys

any feedback ???

Hi there,

A good suggestion. There are macro programs that can do this outside
of Vice proper (autoit comes to mind). Unless I'm misunderstanding
what you are trying to do programs like this would do the job until
it (someday, maybe) gets added to Vice.

And yes, Vice is the best. :)

Thanks for the suggestion Brian.... I'll look around and see if I can
find something like that ( and if it works with Vice running too )

I have tried a BUNCH of different programs, since you posted your
suggestion, but I can't get any to work "within" Vice. "Most" of them
will work with most Windoze apps, to some degree ( which has been a
GREAT feature to have anyway ), but I can't them to work in Vice.

I "think" ????? it probably has something to do with remapping of the
keyboard when you boot Vice, and thereby is defeating the "mapping"
you have installed.

BTW, I tried most of them both ways. Run the macro PRG first and
then boot Vice ( none worked at all.... Vice over-rode them, even if I
only "macro'd" F9-F12), or boot Vice, and then the Macro PRG. That
was a disaster... Most of them just "took over" and the Vice keyboard
emulation, just stopped working all together. A few just locked up
Vice completly.

I have looked at the source code in Vice, and I can "see" area's that
would seem likely to edit, to assign F-9 to F12, but I have no idea,
or am I falmiliar with the programming language used, or how to re-
complie the program once edited. ( nor do I want to attempt it on
"this" program, to learn how.

Some-one here, I know would, know how, and should be able to write a
patch, to program those keys.. not neccisarily a "user programable"
key, but just simple a given function, to F9 to F12 (patch
programmers choice ), would be all that is needed.
