Tried suid root? Or sudo? AFAIR that might help as (was it?) DGA
required it.

Tried it now after creating a sym. link from the user to root's .vice
directory. No change. The only good thing is that now after exiting vice
the original resolution comes back, whereas before it stayed at 800x600
(the resolution vice uses here).
So there was no change switching to DGA1 or DGA2. I also did M-d again to
toggle between windowed and full screen mode.
But as mentioned, I kind of messed up the X config anyway, as for example
XMAME runs slow as sh** now.

Interesting. I haven't tried VICE's fullscreen mode under Linux for
quite some time, as I recall exactly that I didn't want to run it
neither suid nor with sudo (basically I don't want any regular,
non-system app to run as root) but I recall that it worked for me that
some time ago. Shall check it in a few days. Also I am not sure how
XMAME does it but the first thing that comes to my mind is that it might
be delegating video rendering to SDL (which can do a nice "fullscreen"
without root privileges), whereas to my understanding VICE's emulators
usage of SDL is still limited to audio output.

last time i checked vice only changed the X resolution and then creates a
window that covers the full screen....which...uhh...sucks by itself :=P

VICE has XVideo support; you can scale the window to any size you like.
Try x64 -xvideo or look into the menu options.

peter@tuxbox:~$ x64 -xvideo
Reading configuration file `/home/peter/.vice/vicerc'.
Unknown option '-xvideo'.
Error parsing command-line options, bailing out. For help use '-help'
Avslutar...
That didn't work. ;-)

So, it's not compiled into your x64. It's all set up at ./configure
time, look for the failing check - perhaps you're missing the Xv
library?

I was under the impression that the -xvideo option was removed? Text
from the Changelog:
* arch/unix/x11/video.c: Removed XVIDEO resource and -xvideo
option. Added support for interactive selection of hardware
scaling.
