Anyone manage to get VICE 1.17 compiled under OS X? I installed SDL but I
am still having all kinds of problems. Life would be so much easier if they
would release a binary version of 1.17 (1.14 is the latest available which
is way out of date).

VICE 1.14 (Mac OS X) was an external contribution. As far as I remember,
the person who has done that did not answer anymore.
If anyone volunteers for taking up that work (which would mean to adjust
VICE to compile for Mac OS X even for future changes), just drop a mail
to the VICE mailing list

Spiro.

Sure. I did. There is a little gimmick to it though - when it tries to
install the fonts and mkfontscale crashes but other than that there are
no real problems.

Out of curiosity: Which sound driver are you using?
The new CoreAudio driver in 1.17 works *much* better for me than SDL
sound which frequently shuts down due to "fragment problems".

Yes, at least it used to work last time I tried ;-)

After I'm done with the internal libpng and libz support for all platforms
I'll see
what I can do to make a binary distribution of VICE 1.17 for Mac OS X
(and fix any problems that show up).

I used SDL in the previous versions and I use coreaudio in the 1.17,
which indeed works much better.

I don't have Jag at hand now but AFAIR Coreaudio has already been in
there in Jag, hence I assume it should work.

Well, there is not much to elaborate. I used the regular configure and
make. Then just before make install I removed from "install" target in
the data/fonts/Makefile the part that called mkfontdir to avoid the
nasty crash and allow the install process to finish.
The only little annoyance I have left is that the emulators don't get
MITSHM extension into use but even without it, they behave very well in
terms of GFX performance (PB G4 Alu 15")

Can't you just use make with the -k (keep going) option, or does the
mkfontdir part crash the entire system ?
If it just comes up with a usage error or something, please let me know what
the error is and if you know, what the mkfontdir command line options should
be, so I can fix that in the configure script.

On my old machine (Dual G4/800), x64 complained about shared memory.
It ran at full speed with a normal windows, but with a double sized
window it dropped to 40 fps. On my new machine (Dual G5/2.0) it
initializes with shared memory and runs at full speed with double
sized windows as well. I'm using the same x64 binary (1.16, compiled
2005-01-31), so it must be something with the system upgrade.

No, it doesn't actually crash the entire system and I could use the
option but I didn't use it as I preferred to
a) know exactly what's the cause and isolate it
b) be sure that I don't miss another, possibly important error without
digging the logs etc.

No, I believe it's not your fault but rather Apple's. 'mkfontdir' calls
'mkfontscale', which in turn crashes badly:

I reported that to Apple of course.
