Hello friends,

Thanks to many kind contributors from around the world, we at at over
1,300 original disk programs preserved. I have several hundred disks to
go through from a kind contributor (Dustin Lyons) which should keep me
busy for a while. Also continued contributions from friends such as
Curt, Victor, and of course Quader. Special thanks also to Jerry Kurtz
for send me his Super Card for testing- it really helped crack the case
of the newer Vorpal titles.

-

We were able to preserve working versions of the newer Vorpal-protected
titles finally and get them working in the emulators. This means we can
now run California Games, Championship Wrestling, The Games: Summer
Edition, The Games: Winter Edition, and Legend of Blacksilver in their
original form instead of the cracked versions. Dustin must have
write-protected the disks when he bought them, because they are pristine
specimens with not even a single world record saved. :) I still need
undamaged originals for Street Sports Soccer and L.A. Crackdown, as I
think these were the only other disks protected this way.

-

The issue with imaging the "Rainbow Arts" protection has mostly been
solved. There are two version of this protection- one that has a subtle
corruption on track 36. This one works in the emulators if you boot
them several times, due to inexact drive emulation. The second version
has weak-bit checks on track 18 and can only be run if processed with
our newer N2G versions and used with the newest CCS64 beta or my patched
WinVICE. Also, the latter can't be read with a 1571 or 1541-II. For
some reason, these tracks confuse those drives and cause it to panic and
return $00 bytes until you stop reading, regardless of what's on the
disk. They image fine from an original 1541 (A/B/C board).

-

Rapidlok-protected titles are still a tough one, but a few are working now.

-

Anyway, visit the site if you haven't seen it before. I continually
update the archival tools and have put up a version of WinVICE that has
a patch to handle weak-bit protections, along with the source changes
since it's GPL.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this little bit:

The GPL requires you to give the complete source, not just a diff:

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#DistributingSourceI sInconvenient

IMHO, it is enough if you make an OFFER to provide the full source, too
(cf. GPL 3. b)), but I am not completely sure here.

Just for the records,
Spiro.

countless hours, uh, backing up our disks and sorting this stuff out
on our own....sometimes successfully sometimes not. It's great to see
this information now. I may have to go back and try to backup those
games with my newfound knowledge.

Looking at the Disk Database, I'm assuming (I don't see column headers
on my browser) that you are listing the copy protection used on each
game? The last column appears to be notes?

Correct. For some reason the headers are missing-- will be fixed
momentarily. I also need to make it a queryable form since it's now
getting too large for a regular HTML page. :)

can help with anything.

For example, I know that #797 Phantasie III had some form of
protection as I recall spending a lot of quality time with that one
since none of the copy programs I had would copy it. I'll have to see
what it was....

Ahhh, such fond memories!

I would be happy to put up the full source if needed. Is it not enough
to link to the main VICE site?

Hello Pete,

I don't think anyone of the VICE team will have objections. Anyway, from
my understanding of the GPL, this is not enough.

Thus, I would do the following:

1. Link to the main VICE site, possibly to the download link for the
specific VICE version and put up the diff as well as the binary.

2. Add an additional note that I could give the full source, if someone
wants it (the so-called "written offer" according to the GPL)

3. Keep the full source in case someone wants it.

I don't think someone will ever come up with this, but at least, you are
prepared this way, so, you are on the safe side.

Regards,
Spiro.

I simply put another copy of the full source downloadable from the same
place.

I once did a distro of a GPL'd program and was directed by the program's
project coordinator to mirror the sources, that pointing people to the
site was not good enough. I would prolly recommend the same. (The
program was FreeDOS. The distro, FD-ODIN, has now become part of the main
system, and I no longer maintain it.)
