I have some good news on the protection front...
I am starting to get Rapidlok-protected games imaged and booting in VICE
now! :)
They don't check for the bad GCR that exists at every sector as I
originally thought, but some games bump to halftracks at certain times
looking for a signature. The tracks are laid out synced together on an
original disk where a pattern of $7b bytes make up one "sector" of each
track. I believe it is bumping to the halftrack between them and
checking to see if it's in the same place on both tracks, and failing if
it isn't.
The biggest problem with these is the disks seem to go bad far more
often than others. I have about 10 of them and only a couple will boot
reliably from even the original disk on my systems. That makes it real
hard to get a good image.

Mostly all Accolade releases have it (80-90% of them). Also, many
Microprose-released games, such as Gunship, Silent Service, etc. use it.
