Hi all,

I'm just wondering if this is planned. It really pains me that the only
logging possible is to lossy formats, especially since there are
lossless formats being developed based on zlib/PNG, which compress very
well, at least as good, if not better than XviD, and of course lossless to
boot!

Since Vice uses ffmpeg for video encoding, maybe adding support for "ffv1"
(FFmpeg Video 1), an experimental lossless encoder in ffmpeg, would be a
good idea and not much trouble.

One of the Atari 8-bit emulators supports "Video for Windows", so
logging is possible to any codec you have installed, but this works on
Windows only, of course :-)

Even logging each frame to a PNG/gif/raw file (or one big file with a
simple format) would be a major, albeit cumbersome, help.

Regards,

Laust

I agree, I find video output on emulators to be quite handy (for
example, can be used to produce DVDs with game or demo footage). I have
noticed a couple of small issues, one of them being what Laust has
brought up - the limited codec choices. It would be nice if, in addition
to ffmpeg support, the Windows version of VICE would have VfW support
(so that a large number of codecs can be used, or if you have a lot of
hard drive space you could even use uncompressed video and audio).

My other issue only comes into play with NTSC material - the dimensions
of the output video seem correct, but the frames are only written at
50fps, which means that one out of every six frames are being dropped.
Audio seems to stay synced, but dropping 1/6th of the frames kills the
usefulness for NTSC material.

One thing that is necessary if converting to DVD - the exact frame rate
used by the emulator, as opposed to the rounded value stored in the AVI.
Many emulators use an exact 50 or 60fps, but some don't (the NES
emulator FCEU is a prime example of this, as it uses a framerate that is
extremely close to but not quite 60fps, which introduces audio skew
unless corrected for).
