If you're using VICE they have a 'make disk' button on the 'open file' menu.

Open1,8,15,"N:Diskname,XY":Close1 (XY being a 2-digit number)

That should do the trick.

That'll take the .d64 that's currently mounted and wipe it out! (IOW, blow
away the Ultima game disk!)

The Alt-8 dialog (shortcut for File->Attach disk image->Drive 8) has a
"Create image" in the lower right corner for making new .d64 files.

I think there was no reference to diskimages or emulators in the
original posting. Of course, it was posted in c.e.c. and I should have
taken that into consideration. :-)
Thanks for saving that Ultima disk. ;-)

And by the way, you can always copy a d64 image in your filemanager,
rename it and format it in the emulator with the command I've given above.

$ c1541 -format mydisk,id d64 mydisk.d64
