I just upgraded from Windows 98SE to 2000 Pro. Under 98SE, the DOS
(PMODE/W) version of CCS64 2.0 ran just beautifully, but under Win2k
there is no sound.
I tried the DirectX version, which runs fine, but only in 640x480
mode, which means I get a really tiny screen (probably would be better
on a CRT monitor, but I'm on a laptop). If I try 320x200 or 320x240
modes, the sound gets garbled, and when I try to switch back to the
console (F9), the emulator locks up.
CCS64 3.0 has similar problems, and it complains about not being able
to initialize Direct3D (my laptop has an S3 Aurora64V+ chipset, with
the latest drivers from Compaq/HP, but they don't seem to support
Direct3D; dxdiag says so, too) -- and it won't run full-screen.
Would it be possible to trick the DOS version of CCS64 2.0 into
recognizing the sound card? Seems like a long shot, but I thought I'd
ask. Otherwise my choices appear to be (1) eyestrain (2) dual boot
with Win98SE (3) find another C64 emulator. :-(

Hi Thomas,

If you have no specific reason for using CCS64, you might
want to try VICE instead: http://www.viceteam.org/ . Good
luck,

Joe

Try Vice 1.16 instead its better I reckon.
It worked just geat under Win2000 Pro, and is just as good under WIN XP.

I haven't tried this but a program called dosbox might work for you. It is
an emulator to allow old dos games to run on Windows, including Win2000,
with sound and such, and should work for other programs. Take a look and see
if you think this might work.

It also emulates the *performance* of that era computers, so in this case, it
might not be the best solution.

Are you referring to the slow speed of the original computers, or the slow
speed of emulation? :-) In the case of the former, you can use two function
keys to speed up the program or slow it down according to need...

The processing power required for CCS64 requires a Pentium 133 Mhz
computer. In the current edition of Dos Box, the best that you can get is
an equivalent of a 66Mhz computer at best.

Even if you have a good enough computer to get a 133 Mhz performance
rating, that amount is marginal - don't expect to have very good
performance in your emulator either.

MSound allows the proper usage of sound cards for Dos games running under
Windows NT, 2000, or XP. It can be downloaded at:
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=2071

This is a hit-or-miss - it works for some applications but not for others.
Before trying to get sound woring with CCS64, I'd try to see if you can get
sound working on other applications first.

OK, here's the final report --

I tried VICE 1.16. It runs fine, with sound. BUT -- the
lowest-resolution mode that it offers is 640x480, which means I get to
look at an emulated C64 screen the size of a playing card -- just like
the DirectX version of CCS64.

I did not even try DOSBox: my laptop has a 233 MHz Pentium MMX -- way
too slow to be able to emulate a 133 MHz Pentium.

VDMSound works, but again, my machine appears to be too slow. The sound
is "choppy", which makes me suspect that VDMSound isn't getting enough
cycles. Not too surprising given that CCS64 is a major CPU hog.

I think I'm going to investigate C64 emulators for Linux at some point,
but I'm not too hopeful on that score: ever since I upgraded my machine
from Red Hat 7.3 to Fedora Core 3, I have only crippled sound support
(the FC3 ESS1878 sound driver won't recognize my ESS1878 sound chip!)
and getting Xorg into 320x200 mode is an adventure I'm not looking
forward to, either...

I guess it's time to set up dual-boot with Windows 98SE. Once I get the
partitioning situation straightened out, this should be relatively
painless, with LILO remapping partitions so both Windows flavors are
conned into thinking they are on drive C:.

Once again, thanks all for your input!

With VICE for Unix/Linux you get XVideo support, which means you can
scale the emulation window to any size you like. It looks incredible,
but don't take my word for it - I implemented it :-)

ALSA support for recent Linux distributions is also in place in the
development code - drop me a line if you want an ALSA patch for VICE
1.16.

About Fedora Core 3: In my experience the base installation is
severely crippled on lots of hardware - you have to run an update!

Good luck!

Did you try the menu item - Options - Double Size?

Oops, no, I missed that one!
It looks good with Double Size enabled -- but <sigh> the machine is
just too slow. I can't keep up with 50 fps.
Can't expect too much from a 233 MHz Pentium MMX, I guess... I'll just
have to bite the bullet and set up dual boot with Win98.
