I'm finally able to get high speed internet where I live at . I have
all the newest consoles so I would like to download a few games and
movies , and also a few of the Genny games that I do not have . What
is a good download speed . I can go DSL with a opton of 256 kb ,560
kb , or 1mb per second . I can also get another option from another
company that requires a router to a tower about 6 miles away that has
a speed of 3 mb up and 3 mb down . The only problem is that my
neighbors can interfer with my router sometimes when I'm using my pc
or gamming machines . So what I'm asking is dsl fast enough to
download movies games ect . Thanks

Faster is always better when it comes to download/upload speed. I would
go with either the DSL 1 meg package or the 3 meg thing. I guess I need
more info on what you mean when you say your neighbors can "interfere"
with you while you're using it before I can offer any suggestion on that...

I was told when they are on their pc the same time my router can
interfer with theirs or vice a versa . What I really need to know is
how fast one can download a game or movie using a dsl at those speeds
given before or for playing games online against others without lag
time . Can dsl compete on those terms ? Thanks

Hmmmm, I still don't see how they could interfere with your router, but
perhaps I'm missing something.

One the movie/game downloading: The typical movie is around 700 megs, an
HD film is around 2 gigs(or higher). A DSL connection downloading at a
solid 1 meg a second would still take a while...but if you're watching a
streaming movie, then it would probably start about 10 to 15 minutes
after you initiate the download(though MS has stated that movies are now
"instant" thanks to some changes they made to the new "Zune" marketplace
via Xbox Live).

The 1 meg package for DSL should be sufficient for online gaming, as
long as you're not hosting. Hosting would be dependent on your upload
speed and I'm not sure what that would be(though if it were 512kbps or
higher, you should do alright).

I think he means that everyone past the router three miles away shares
a certain amount of bandwidth. Cable internet works that way. How it
will affect you will depend on your neighbors' usage. No easy way to
gauge that.

Lag has less to do with bandwidth and more to do with latency.

DSL doesn't slow down based on community usage, only Cable does that and
even then it's only if the ISP has failed to upgrade to their customers'
needs. The single biggest limiting factor on bandwidth with DSL is the
distance from the phone company's central office. My connection speed
is "up to 7.1Mbps down", but I only get about 5Mbps because of the
distance from my DSL modem to the central office.

I break down the benefits of Cable versus DSL like this. Cable should
work to the speed the cable company offers during off peak times. DSL
should work to the speed the phone company offers, if the line tests are
thorough enough before installation. Either one has risks, but all you
lose is time and DSL features much more consistent speeds overall.
