of this post)

'ello all,

A bit of a forward...
(if you're not interested in nearly putting yourself to sleep with the
following, the gist of it is that I am looking for some very specific
storage drawers for my Genesis collection and could use some help)
Years and years and years ago, when I only had around 30 or 40 Genesis
games(as hard as that is to believe), I came across these hip Genesis
storage units at Wal-Mart. Costing around $20, these slick pieces of
cart storage held a respectable 36 games...*along with their manuals*!
Again, only owning around 30 to 40 carts at the time I bought just two
of these awesome units.

Flash forward more years than I care to remember and I now currently own
368 Genesis carts...and still just the two units. I had about given up
on ever finding anymore of these things when a buddy of mine alerted me
that he had seen a guy selling one on a forum somewhere...and then
another buddy managed to come up with one in a lot of gaming hardware he
had purchased off Craig's List.

This put me up to three units and a decent 108 slots of cart storage.
Doing some quick math, or making Moffsoft FreeCalc do some quick math, I
found that I would need just eleven of these units to cover my entire
collection(and I already have three, so now all I need are eight more)!
This is actually possible, I could really make this happen if I just had
a few more sets of eyes helping me out in the field.

With that said, to anyone who'd be willing to just keep it in the back
of their mind, to anyone who'd be willing to shoot me a quick message
letting me know they've come across one either in the field or on the
net, to anyone who may have one(or a few) and are looking to sell them,
to anyone who'd be willing to help with this dream of mine...I'd
appreciate it to no end. BTW, yes, I am aware of how very pathetic it is
that I consider quality Genesis cart storage to be an actual dream...;)

Ok, the details you'll need:
* These storage units were made by a company called "A.L.S. Industries",
apparently located in Torrence, CA 90504.
* The drawers all have the classic gray pin stripes that early Genesis
game cases showed, as well as the official Sega Genesis logo on them.
* Despite being branded by a company in California, these units all have
stickers on the bottom stating they were made in Indonesia.
* The drawers will hold exactly 36 carts and will have two slots for
manuals. All drawers will have the "A.L.S." logo towards the two slots
used for storing manuals.
* The housing of the actual unit will be black and have a wood-like
texture on it(it's just particleboard though).
* They are supposed to come with six rubber "legs", but I think it'll be
extremely unlikely that any of these units will still have them
attached(as they fall out easily). Don't worry about the legs, I can
live without them.

All I really ask is that the units are in relatively good shape and
contain the drawer that exhibits the gray Genesis pin striping with the
official Sega logo present. I can apply some touch-up paint on them, I
can glue them back together, I can clean them up and I can find
replacement rubber legs for them. If you happen across one of these
please don't hesitate to contact me! You can catch me via a Private
Message here on the forum, on AOL Instant Messenger, through my private
email located on my site(in my sig) or by just simply replying to this
post. I am willing to buy them, trade for them, pay for shipping on
them, whatever it takes!

Any help with this would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Until you find what you're looking for, try the standard 3-drawer
cassette tape storage units. They work quite well for regular-size Sega
cartridges, though the fit is a bit loose. I put the long EA carts in a
wooden cassette tape storage tray. I also have a plastic cassette tape
carrying case that holds a dozen or so games that I can carry around if
using a Nomad.

I've heard this before, about the tape racks and whatnot. If I just
didn't have so very many carts I would consider it. Thing is, I have:

372 Genesis games
21 32X games
23 Sega Master System games

The cardboard boxes I currently keep 90% of them in(the other 10% are in
the three Genesis storage units I currently have) still come up to 6 in
total, so you can imagine how many tape racks that'd probably take.

I have managed to come up with another Genesis storage unit, a friendly
Sega fan over at Sega-16 flagged me down and we worked out a deal. So
that makes 4, and they hold a total of 144 carts. That still leaves me
with 272 carts that need homes though...and that comes up to 7.5 units.

When I first thought about this, for some reason I only thought about my
Genesis carts, which is why I thought I'd only need 11 in total...but it
turns out that 32X and SMS games fit nicely in the units as well, so I'd
like to get enough to house them all.

It's a long ways away from happening, that's for sure...but I am going
to keep on trying...some day, maybe just some day I'll have all enough.

The tape racks I have store three rows of 14 in a similar size case
(your ALS racks store three rows of 12), so I don't really see what the
problem would be, other than a bit of jiggling from the loose fit, and
some fake woodgrain. Also, they have three one-row drawers, rather than
a single three-row drawer. The only thing you'll miss is the
instructions storage, and there are other ways to handle that. They
should stack just fine with what you already have, and you can replace
them as you find more "good" cases.

Well, more than anything it's just a conformity thing. I already had two
of the ALS Genesis storage bins, I now have four....they all look the
same, they all carry the carts and manuals. Adding in some tape racks
would just throw it all off.

Now, in terms of just using that for a while until I got something else:
I have the cardboard boxes: They're free and already in use. So, going
out and trying to hunt down some tape cases that would kind of work for
a while just isn't too high on my list...but you do make some good
points below:

That's a good point...and I guess I can try to keep my eyes open when
I'm out and about at various Thrift, Pawn and Gaming shops...if they
were cheap enough, it'd definitely provide a little bit more protection
than the cardboard boxes do. Something to consider...
