i'm still searching for my old sega and if i can't find it i plan on
buying a new one off ebay or a second hand store. the only issue is
that the used game store i always go to doesn't sell them anymore
because they're too old and are becoming increasingly incompatible
with newer tvs. i don't know a lot about the connection specifics and
the clerk didn't go into detail about why they won't work. my tv is at
least 3 years old and still has an analog tuner, so i'm wondering,
will that be enough to get it to hook up or should invest in the
console they're selling that also plays NES and Super NES game? i'd
prefer to just have the sega but mostly just for nostalgia reasons and
because i just want to be able to use the old controller, ahahah.

The relevant terms are NTSC, QAM, and ATSC. Assuming you're in the United
States, NTSC channels three and four are how old TVs receive the RF signal
from game systems. QAM and ATSC are the digital formats, and for the
purposes of your question they're not relevant to game console output. As
long as the TV will accept composite video or analog RGB video, it will
take the Genesis video output from the correct cabling. Most of the newer
TVs lack the NTSC tuner, which is why you can't use the RF adapter.
Also, your shift key appears to be broken.

But this does pose the question, will light gun games, Genesis or
Dreamcast, work on the new televisions? I only have CRT's (I WANNA
stay in the 20th Century, dammit!) but I thought I've heard of
problems with LCD and plasma tv's.

You'd be one of the few...did you see the sales on that one?
Jeez..."future of portable gaming" my ass.

No, it will not. *No* light gun games work on HDTVs with the exception
of games that come with some sort of special gun(like the new Guncon on
the Shitstation 3). This was my main reason, besides how horrible old
school consoles look on HDTVs, in keeping my 27" Panasonic TV once I got
an HDTV. I *love* lightgun games!
