I am amazed at all the people out there who like battlezone so much.
It is one of the easiest games that I've ever played. Once you learn
how to drive a tank the game is trivial. I can't brag of a great high
score though, because the game got too boring after such a short time.
That is the problem with most games. For a game to be good there should
be a gradual progression of difficulty; most games need this to be
successful commercially also. One of my favorite games is Tempest.
This game is incredibly hard to master (I never made past the invisible
stage). Another great game is Mr. Do; it strikes what I consider a perfect
balance between "maze" games and "combat" games. If you see either of these
in an arcade you should play a dozen or so games, and see what a real game
is like. To be able to play for a long time on one quarter shouldn't
be a matter of muscular endurance.

On the other hand:

a) I can't really afford to "get good" at most of the new games, either in
time or in money. So if it's a matter of playing a game I've got a chance
of doing well at, or trying to improve my score on a game that slaughters
me, and I've only got one quarter, or I've only got time for one or two games,
the choice is obvious.

b) Battlezone's graphics are so BEAUTIFUL -- I Robot is really the first
raster game that can compete with vector 3D wireframe.

I don't play to win, as much as to have fun and kill some time. Tempest
doesn't do either for me.

Yeah, but the graphics are sooo nice (especially considering when it
was first released.)

Agreed. I passed one up for $75, though. Bad red color gun in the tube.
These machines tend to wear out pretty fast due to the nature of the
color vector tube. Battlezone has the virtue of being b/w (or b/green)
and much more stable.
