Crossposted for what I hope are good reasons. Long ago I had a pristine,
barely played copy of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego for the
Genesis. Box, manual, cart, and the outer cardboard package that held the
plastic box and a copy of the 1985 World Almanac that served as the
hintbook for the game. Foolishly, I traded the thing away and now I'm
trying to put it all back together again.
Does anybody happen to know any identifying features of the almanac that
shipped with the game? I can draw the cart, the box and the manual from
various sources online, but nobody seems to have the complete package. I
don't mind getting the other book separately, but I'm obsessively hunting
after a matching edition (if not an authentic accessory.)

I actually picked up that game for Benstylus a long while back, it was
complete with the original almanac. I'll shoot him a PM on the WAG
Forums, see if he'll stop by with any info he may have on it. :)

Dammit, I meant to post this ebay auction as well, showing the original
almanac:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Where-in-Time-is-Carmen-Sandiego-Co mplete-VG-7-10_W0QQitemZ120312926253QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 120312926253&_trkparms=72%3A1205|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|2 40%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
From what I remember, it wasn't anything official, it didn't say
"Carmen... edition" or anything like that. It'll just be an older
version of the "Desk Encyclopedia".

Here's his reply:

"The only one I had was Where in Time was Carmen Sandiego...
it had the new american desk almanac.
not sure if it's the same one that is supposed to come with "world", but
it's a start."
Hope that helps. :)

Fish and Bel, thanks for checking. Looks like for playing purposes, I can
get away with ordering a standard copy of the 1985 Almanac. For reasons
that are obvious in retrospect, there seem to be more copies of that
year's edition on the market. I may still hold out for a complete copy in
the slipcover box if I can find one. I appreciate the assist.

Dude... just use the current version of the World Almanac. It's
basically all the same.

I'm not sure if Ben is selling, or has already sold his copy...but I can
ask him, if you want. It's complete, IIRC.

That'll be handy when Carmen goes to Yugoslavia. Or Burma. Or Zaire. Or
Kampuchea. :)
The world has changed a lot in 23 years. One of the reasons I'm interested
in the game is that there are a lot of virtual artifacts to be found in
it. In the middle of the 80s, we all assumed that peace in the Middle East
was within reach, that the cold war was a permanent state of hostility,
and that the ethnic relocation scars of World War II would never heal.
Carmen Sandiego (and Ryo Hazuki) can still go to Kowloon, but for us that
place is gone forever.
