Time to clean out some deadwood, folks. I intend to apply the same
criteria we use for creating new groups to these old, unused ones:
there must be a clearly demonstrated need not filled by another group,
AND a sufficient volume of postings to warrant a separate group. If
you have a compelling reason why any of the following groups should
remain, MAIL those reasons to me. Unless I get some very special
reasons or sufficient outpouring of support for a group, it will be
removed (that is, each one in this list) on or about July 26.

The candidates for removal are listed here, along with a set of responses
to potential objections to their removal.

net.movies.sw
-------------
This group was originally created when "The Empire Strikes Back" was
released (I believe), and was intended to keep all the discussions
out of net.movies. Nothing has been posted to net.movies.sw in
many, many months that was not also posted to net.movies. There
seems little reason to support this group until a new Star Wars
epic comes out (years), and we can recreate the group at that time,
should the net last so long.

net.rec.coins
-------------
Nothing has been posted to this group in at least 3 months. The volume
is so low, there is no reason why "net.rec" couldn't be used for
the occasional posting about coin collecting.

net.rec.disc
------------
Same aregument as for net.rec.coins -- no one has posted anything to
the group in at least 6 weeks, and the volume is so low that net.rec
could easily handle the occasional posting.

net.women.only
--------------
This is, alas, an experiment that failed. The only thing this group
seems to be used for anymore is the infrequent posting of "How do I
get on the mailing list?" questions. The group didn't work as expected,
and the members of the mailing list prefer the mailing list to even
a moderated newsgroup. Anyone interested in getting on the mailing
list can read Chuqui's monthly posting in mod.newslists on mailing
lists for info.

net.micro.zx
------------
Does anyone really want to admit to owning any of these? There has
been no traffic in the group for at least 6 weeks, and the volume
has always been so low it could easily be handled in the net.micro
newsgroup.

net.mail.msggroup
-----------------
This is supposed to be a gateway from the Arpa list, but there has
been no traffic in at least 7 months. If we must have the gateway,
why not create a "mod" or "fa" group for it if the Arpa side
ever comes back to life?

Gee, I'd hate to see this one go. How about renaming it as 'net.doorstop'?

Just a quick article before this group is blown into oblivion.

When Star Wars first came out, I heard that it was one of
nine episodes loosely based on an already published book. Can
anyone tell me more information on the title, author or anything
else on this book? Please respond by mail.

Summary:

Yes, I do admit to owning the volkswagen of computers. Essentially, there
is nothing the humble ZX can't do that, say, a PC can. It's just slower,
lower resolution, and 2^1000 times cheaper. Also, I like my ZX because
you don't need to read a stack of manuals to master it, both in hardware
and software. It's a wonderful thing if you write in assembler, and among
the gizmos I've added to my system are 2 good keyboards, an 8-bit parallel
I/O board, 16K (eventually I'll get around to piggybacking another 32K
above that), the only new $50 printer in existence, and a "robot" radio-
controlled car. And all this for under $500, considering that I bought
90% of that stuff over 3 years ago! Beat that, PC et al!

(Now if only I could buy about 128 of them and figure out parallel
processing... (sigh)	:-} )

Since I'm new to the system and don't know how to properly use
mail, I'll have to respond here.

The movie _Star Wars_ was not properly titled. As you know the second
movie was titled _Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back_ and the third
movie was titled _Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi_. The first movie
should have been titled _Star Wars: A New Hope_. _Star Wars_ is the
actually the title of the whole saga, which is made up of nine episodes,
as in a Matinee serial, which gave Lucas most of his inspiration.
These nine episodes are in turn broken into 3 three episode segments.
Each segment covering a short time span of great changes. The movies
that have been released so far are Episodes 4, 5, and 6 or the middle
 segment of the saga.

Lucas is supposed to have an outline of the entire saga. How detailed
this outline is I never heard, but I know that it's not set in stone.
Apparantly the outline keeps evolving as he gets new ideas. (I'm not
sure Darth Vader, Luke, and Leia were all related in the outline
when Lucas first produced _Star Wars_. Supposedly Han and Luke were
related in one version and went off in the Millenium Falcon, their
dad's spaceship, to rescue their dad , similar to the Hardy Boys).
Apparantly, when Lucas tried to sell his concept, no one was
interested, especially in a project of that size , nine films.
20th Century Fox decided to gamble, but only on one film and the
4th Episode (A New Hope) was the most commercially acceptable.

The three segmants of the saga are distinguished by the passage of
time. The First Segmant is supposed to detail how the Old Republic
was corrupted and turned into the Empire, and how Darth Vader came
to power, destroying the other Jedi's. Supposedly Ben and Darth
battle in which Darth becomes the disfigured human that we've seen.
I suppose Darth also thinks Ben was killed in this battle. (This
battle supposed to take place over a Volcano or something. At the
end of the first segment the Emperor comes into power and Ben goes
into hiding, after hiding the babies Luke and Leia.

20 years later, Luke has reached adulthood, but doesn't know his
destiny. This is the second segment which we've have seen produced.
The Empire is destroyed and the Rebel Aliance has won the cosmic battle
for Good. Luke meets his destiny and destroys the Emperor.

Approximentally 20 years later, we start the third segmant. After
the Emperor is destroyed, the Rebel Alliance has restored the
Republic. But all is not well. The territorial governors don't
want to just give up there power. The New Republic is still weak.
It has not reached the full Glory of it's former self, and a new
threat puts it in danger of being destroyed. The leaders must
face and overcome this threat, and secure the New Republic before
 our story can be done.

The only characters that will be in all nine episodes are the two
droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO. The entire saga is seen through their eyes
and told to us. We catch a glimpse of the story telling ability of
C-3PO in _Return of the Jedi_ when he relaying the rebels experience
to the Ewoks. (Who were originally supposed to be Chewbaca's race,
but through TV specials and the Comic Book, his race was shown to
be too technologically advance for the primitive society Lucas wanted
to use to overthrow the technologically advanced Empire.) The other
characters may come and go, some of our heros may even die, as Ben did.

Well there's the basic outline of the _Star Wars_ saga as I understand
it from reading various articles in magazines. The full nine part story
has never been published in any form that I'm aware of. My big question
is, does Lucas still plan to produce all nine episodes as he once stated
he would, or has he decided the he told enough of his Epic Sage. I sure
hope the formers true, but I've heard nothing of a new movie, and in the
end of a TV special _Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga_, Lucas
makes a comment that almost sounds like he finished and his stories told.
We movie viewers deserve to know the answers to all our questions: How
did Anakin Skywalker become the twisted Darth Vader? How did the Emperor
get such command over the Force, when he was never a Jedi? What are the
Clone Wars? Who will run the New Republic? Will a new order of Jedi's
arise from Luke's training? These questions an many more will be answered
in the continueing saga of _Star Wars_.

[Close the blast doors! Close the blast doors!]

Just a couple of additions:

ORIGINALLY (and I mean *way* back there) the Star Wars saga was 12
parts. I don't know if it was cut down to 9 before or after George
went to see some hot-shots in Hollywood.

Also, ORIGINALLY, Luke was a girl. I guess eventually he decided
that the world just wasn't ready for that and he settled on Leia to
be a strong enough female character. I think "A New Hope" was pretty
much sticking to the original, but with the next two, you can't tell how
much George might have wandered from his original to make it sell better
or fit the times better (after all, he wrote the original stuff a LONG
time ago).

As far as I have heard about the other 6 films, he was going to take
a 10 year vacation before doing them. Then he wasn't going to do them
at all (which will make SW4, SW5, and SW6 look pretty silly in 50 years
when there's no parts 1,2, and 3). Once I even heard that Linda Ronstadt
(with whom he was said to be "involved" at least at that time...life's
tough, ain't it?) had talked him back into doing the other 6. That's
the last I heard about any of that, though, and I don't know how much of
it is/was true. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Or maybe
read about it in the National "for people with inquiring minds...like
my pet wombat" Inquirer. :-)
