The TURING compiler group at the Computer Systems Research
Institute, University of Toronto has produced a version of the
TURING programming language that runs on 8086 MS-DOS systems.
(Our previous versions run on Vaxes, 370's and SUNs.) TURING is being
used at the University of Toronto in all Department of Computer
Science introductory courses and as well as in most of the upper level
courses (approximately 3000 students). TURING is a super Pascal (it
provides the features of Pascal plus modules, dynamic arrays, varying
length strings, etc) with a no frills syntax (no semicolons, no program
header, etc) and with an airtight formal definition (program execution is
completely determined by the TURING language specification). We have
never tried to put together a distribution on floppies before and we are
looking for user comments. Therefore, we have decided on the following:

Our budget will allow us to produce 100 copies of the compiler
distribution to be given away without cost to serious software people
who are willing to send us written comments about the quality of
	the distribution and the compiler.

To use the compiler, you must have an IBM-PC/XT, or TI-PC with a hard
disk, or equivalent. We are supplying a graphics interface
for those with the colour graphics options. The distribution
contains a complete compiler, paragrapher, and full-screen editor
(written in TURING). System and graphics interfaces are also supplied.
The distribution consists of 4 floppy disks, an installation guide, and
	an evaluation form.

You should also have a copy of the book "An Introduction to Computer
Programming Using the TURING Programming Language" by R.C. Holt and
J.N.P. Hume (available from Reston Publishing, a Prentice-Hall company).

We are willing to send the floppies free of charges to the first
100 people who indicate that they are interested and are willing
to send us written comments using the evaluation form.

This is only a preliminary version; all rights remain with the
University of Toronto. You may not distribute or sell the compiler
without direct written consent from the University of Toronto.

If more than 100 people respond, we are willing to distribute copies
at cost (roughly $50). Please indicate if you are willing
to pay this cost should your request come after the first 100.
