'ello all,

Well, I think it's finally happened, I think my Model 1 Sega CD unit is
on its last legs. I can't seem to play any game without it freezing at
some point(be it right after I start it up, or after an hour of play)
and it's really upsetting me.

I hate to put this unit down, but there's just no other option I can
think of other than trying to find another Model 1 unit in good
condition(and let's face it, that's not an easy thing to do).

I've got my X'eye and am thinking of breaking it out for my Genesis/Sega
CD/32X needs...but man I hate to give up the Genesis 1 unit as well.
Anyway, I notice that X'eye wants a 9.5 volt PSU. I have 10 volt PSUs
and 9 volt PSUs: Which would be safest to use?

It's not the voltage, it's the amperage that you should be concerned with.
The CDX and the X'eye require 1.5 amps of power, whereas the normal
Genesis 2 power supply puts out .7 amps. You need Sega part MK-4122 or JVC
part AA-S95J. Sega-Parts.com got absorbed by Left Coast Games, and the
direct URL to order it is here:

Much appreciate. I couldn't get the link to work, but I'll hit the site
and look around. Still debating whether or not I want to start looking
around for a Model 1 SCD unit or just go with the X'eye. What's irking
me about the X'eye, is the fact that if you have the 32X connected, you
actually have to lift it up and out of the system to pop the lid for the
Sega CD games. :(

Just got it to come up....dammit, it's Sega-Parts! Man I hate these
bastards. Overpriced unlike anything else, and the shipping takes
*years*. I thank you for giving me the part number though, I can start
looking on ebay or someplace to see if I can find one. :)

I did say who you were dealing with. :) The secret with these guys is to
order over the phone, and not through their web page. They're an old
fashioned outfit, and they operate much better in person than they do
through the server. And $17 for the AC adapter is not bad, considering
this is an unusual part. If you get at really loose ends, it's probably
worth checking the generic adaptors at Fry's or Radio Shack to see if they
can supply a beefy equivalent.

Argh, I completely missed that, sorry about that. :)

I may look in to that. I'm just so depressed that the Model 1 SCD is
finally dying on me. I bought that thing brand new for $265 a little
after it came out...loved it. What's also upsetting is that to do the
X'eye option I have to give up my Model 1 Genesis(my dad got it for me
for X-Mas the year it came out, I still have the original box, manual,
everything that goes with it. Though I don't like how it looks...I may
see if I can find a model 2 SCD unit. That might clear this whole thing
up. :)

Don't know if it applies but my front load CD and 1 generation Genesis would
need the contacts on the joining assembly cleaned when it would not boot up
properly or freeze randomly in games (I had this happen on occasion playing
the 1st Lunar back in the day - very frustrating)

I remember completely dissasembling both units, cleaning and reseating all
applicalble connectors and it worked fine after that. That was about 15
years ago and it still works fine on the rare occasion I fire it up again. I
also stilll have the original boxes, baggies, wire ties, manuals for both
units.

I opened it the other night, cleaned it all pretty well and it didn't
freeze up again for about another hour, but that's as far as I got. It
also has a real issue on freezing up whenever I keep it paused for long
periods of time. I wish I knew more about the unit, to see what else I
could possibly attempt. I really, really don't want to give it up. Hell,
I'd even pay someone to take a look at it if I could just find someone(I
doubt it'd be local, or hell even any place on the net).

I've also tried running lens cleaners in it, didn't seem to do much
good. I may attempt to remove the 32X unit and see if it freezes up
then...I doubt it'll make much difference, but my 32X unit is very
temperamental, just takes the slightest nudge and it'll freeze whatever
game you're playing. It's fine as long as you don't touch it, but it's
real dicey when you have to turn the Game Genie On or Off, or something
like that.

Would be nice if it was the 32X unit acting up...I know all about
cleaning and fixing those bastards. ;)
