Alright, posted a quick video for SWA today. It consists of the game's
intro, the demo play sequences and then a few levels from both the
Arcade and Super 32X modes.

Pretty impressive game, I've got to say. I didn't like it when I first
played it but the more and more I got in to it, the more I liked it.
Anyone else try this one out, if so, what did you think?

As usual, the video can be found in the Whip Ass Videos section of the
site, or in the game's quick review. :)

I didn't pick up a 32X until they went on fire sale like back in '96, so
at that point I had been playing PSX and Saturn games and was not
terribly impressed with the 32X.

That said, I did appreciate what it was doing for what it was, and at
the time, it was the only place to get arcade perfect (yeah, I know)
ports of Afterburner and Space Harrier, so I did enjoy it for a bit of time.

I did try to accumulate a complete collection of 32X carts, and out of
all of them, I did spend the most time with SWA. It really wasn't that bad.

I've owned it since launch and played it periodically. The Mame
emulated arcade version isn't much better in any way I can tell. I used
to think that the graphics weren't as good for the 32X version, but now
I actually think that they might have been enhanced in some way. My
biggest gripe is the tie fighters that fly through walls on the Death
Star. If it weren't for that, I'd just think it was an insanely
difficult game. With that, it's an insanely difficult and unfinished
game that could have been so much more.

Ah, yeah, I can dig it. I can't remember when I got mine, but I think it
was a little bit after the Saturn came out.

I never really cared for either game, but I loved MK2 and Shadow
Squadron to death once I got them.

Yeah, it's pretty hip. I wish it wasn't quite so hard towards the end,
but I enjoyed it for the most part. I wouldn't mind getting almost every
32X game...it seems to have a really high ratio of quality titles in its
meager library.

I just don't like how fucked up the control of the cursor is in MAME.
I'm sure you could probably configure it to use your mouse, but I've yet
to ever figure out how to do that...

Hmmmmm, well, the arcade version was just vector-based, so IMO this
beats the fuck out of that version. ;)

It it hard, no doubt. Pisses me off that the "recharge shield" code was
taken out(according to Steve Lashower's website), that could have come
in really handy. As it is, the farthest I can ever make it is the Death
Star's trench run. :(

Yeah, I haven't had any luck with configuring the arcade version of Star
Wars Arcade in Mame to work with any of the PC gaming devices that I
own. I also haven't bothered to read the development release on why
they added the game to whatever version of Mame added it.

The original was vector based, the Sega made Star Wars Arcade game was a
Model 1 arcade board game using the same type of flat shaded polygons as
the 32X version does. From what I have been able to see of the arcade
version in Mame, the 32X version may well be superior.

I've made it to one of the star destroyer scenes where you fly into the
ship, but not past that. The game is insanely hard and I do think that
it is impossible to dodge shots.

I can get my Saturn controllers to work with it via that adapter I
bought, and any give MS Sidewinder...but still not the mouse.

Really? That's wild, I had no idea Sega put a version of this game out
in the arcade. I just figured they called it SW "Arcade" because it was
based off the original vector based game. How cool. I'll have to look up
some info on that, would love to see some screenshots! Thanks for the
heads up!

The lasers seem like mandatory hits to me, but the round-ish sort of
projectiles can be shot. It's just tough all around. I was messing
around and it seems like you get to do different stuff based on what
ship and difficulty you choose. Like, I NEVER got to play that one
mission where you take on a Star Destroyer with the X-Wing, but I've
done it twice with the Y-Wing. Weird stuff like that...

Speaking of the Y-Wing, I'd be the Death Star trench may be possible
with it, assuming you had a second player to man the secondary gun.
