I wasn't real thrilled with this one, for some reason. The quality
sucks, that's for sure...but that's what happens when you take mpeg or
avi files and "flash" them. ;) I really liked the "Burn them!" Sega
commercial where the kid gets either a SCD or 32X and when the people
ask him what they want him to do with the older systems...;)

Are you kidding!? That'd take precious time and effort! ;)

Thank you SO much for posting this Greg. this is THE commercial for
Genesis that I had been searching for, for AGES, without success.
after all these years, I see it again.
I haven't seen this since 1989.
You know how many people think that Sonic was the first Genesis game,
that Genesis came out in 1991 or 1990? Some people only remember the
early to mid 90s
"SEGA Scream" commercials.
Or usually at best, the "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" commercials of
1990, are the oldest ones people will remember.
For me, it's the late 1989 ones that I wanted to see the most. your
Golden Axe commercial was one of them, this was one of the others.
thank you again.

Glad you enjoyed it! I'm actually kind of surprised how accurate my
memories of this commercial were. I guess it must have had a big impact
on me back in the day.
For the sake of clarity, though, I should point out that it was somebody
else, not me, who posted this video to YouTube. Three cheers for him/her
:) Hopefully a version with better sound will pop up eventually.

I know, but if you had not mentioned it here, I would not have seen it
today, or perhaps anytime soon :0 hopefully someone will find a
higher-quality version and upload it for download since YouTube
compresses videos severely.
I remember that commercial pretty clearly too. not completely clearly
but the main parts.
I think for '89 it had some impact. Sega's marketing in 1989 and early
1990 totally overwelhmed NEC's marketing for TurboGrafx-16, and Sega
hadn't even started yet.
p.s. I also hope to see a certain TurboGrafx-16 commercial for
Legendary Axe.

Heh, I remember the days when it was still socially acceptable
(and proper) for a young person to tuck in his shirt. Now that I've
seen this commercial I remember it too, it was one of the commercials
that made me want to get a Genesis that year. I had a vivid memory of
Thunderblade on the SMS, and seeing it and After Burner on the Genesis
was all I needed to know.

Though it's a quite a long shot, you could try emailing the guy who
uploaded it...he *might* have the original mpeg/avi version of it...who
knows. Thing is, since
99.9.93842039432904230948234u3204982834098329042130974120387 5% of stuff
on YouTube is stolen, he probably jacked it from someone else who
jacked it from some site...and well, you get the picture. ;)

Yeah, I know what you mean. My "Sega Tribute Video" ended up on YT at
one point without my knowing it. It was kind of frustrating when I found
out, because people were criticising and posting innacurate
"corrections" for the dates in the video, and I couldn't respond to them
because you have to sign up first (which I didn't want to do).

I remember being particularly impressed by the dragon in Altered Beast.
Something about controlling a dragon in a game just seemed impossibly
high-tech!
I'm actually kind of surprised at how expensive this commercial looks,
especially considering the small size of Sega of America at the time and
how little money they must have had for the Genesis launch. In a way it
reminds me of the Apple "1984" commercial, except instead of featuring a
bunch of drones hypnotised by "Big Blue" it has a bunch of kids
hypnotised with boredom from playing Nintendo games! Not many people
realise that Sega's Genesis advertising was pretty confrontational from
the start, long before the famous Sega Scream campaign.

What kills me is that sometimes they'll even crop the watermark of the
original video...on top of not giving credit to the originating site.
I've often times thought of uploading some of my stuff, and add a
description like "I just wanted to fuck everyone with the shit quality
that Flash'ed video yields". ;)

that commercial may have been expensive -- but Sega was probably doing
pretty well, thanks to the success of their arcade games. they
certainly didn't get the money to fund Genesis and it's launch with the
money they made (or lost) on the Master System.
I was impressed by that commercial at the time, but I never thought
about the 1984 Mac Superbowl ad, well probably because I didn't
remember it.
heh, I remember retiring my Master System to the shelf when I got my
Genesis. I was played Altered Beast most of that day with the sound
turned all the way up. my mom was horrified by the sounds and the
poster of Altered Beast, thought it was too evil looking, I laughed and
actually had to explain that "this was nothing". my mom wasn't even
one of those ultra right-wingers, just didnt like anything evil
looking. but she'd seen me play the arcade game before when our family
went out to eat. i told her, it's the same game, remember? LOL.
