OK, I'll show my ignorance to all things Sega - what's a "**MIB**
JAPANESE PAL AREA I Sega Mega Drive/Genesis system!"?!

I looked on Google and all I got was a link to an ended eBay auction for
a mk.1 Genesis? So what's the deal?

if it's mint in box, it can't possibly be a Genesis(american), Japanese
unit, AND a PAL (european) unit..

It's one or the other, or was modified. and if it's modified, it's no
longer mint in box..

I have a Japanese spec Megadrive that is PAL and wasn't modified, could've
been a Hong Kong release since they use PAL over there.

Doesn't make sense.. Technically those models don't exist.. That
would be the fourth region ID for the Genesis, of which doesn't exist..
Only three region IDs exist.. (America, Europe, and Japan)..

I'd be more than happy to snap some photos of my Mega Drive. I checked the
inside and there are no mods. Mine came originally from the UAE though.
You're also forgetting PAL-M which is Brazil.

Here's some text:
Sega Mega Drive 1 in Asia (variant to European Mega Drive and often mistaken
for a Japanese Mega Drive)
a.. No text printed around circle
b.. Larger '16-Bit' logo used
c.. 'Start' and 'Reset' button are blue

Hmm, this is interesting... I guess there is a fourth region ID.. I
wonder why though, in this mode, the Genesis write a "0" to RAM in this
mode.. It's as if it just doesn't exist..

Well, after I posted that I thought you might have been asking about

Yeah, it's quite odd to say the least. On mine the cartridge slot is the
same as my Japanese Megadrive however, I can't think of any PAL cartridges
that have the same shape as the Japanese releases. I guess it just adds to
my collection of weird games/systems, like my Strider or Toejam and Earl
that have the Sega Genesis logo on the top of the box and say Mega Drive on
the bottom of the box (they're not pirated carts).

I would like to ROM dump those cartridges and try them in an emulator..
If they really are "JAP" and "50Hz", they shouldn't work at all, as
emulators don't support this mode, as it's not even known to exist..

Maybe they never bothered to add support for it because every Japanese
PAL game was also available in UK PAL or Japanese/US NTSC?

No, they never added it because the mode isn't supposed to exist.. I
checked up with an Ex-Sega employee, and even he don't even know of the
JAP/50Hz mode to even exist.. It's supported by the Genesis hardware,
yes, but he doesn't even know of it actually being used..

First of all, the Megadrive system and the cartridges I have are totally
different. I bought my games many years ago before I even got this
Megadrive. Feel free to look me up in the Google newsgroups and I'm sure
anybody could vouch for me because I've talked about my two uncommon carts.
The Megadrive, I don't know about the territorial lockout on the system. If
I have free time, I'll hook it up and see what games do and do not work on
it. Feel free to see my posts, I've always been legitimate and never (please
excuse my French) bullshitted anybody. If I have the time, I'll test it on
other carts and post my results (the cartridges I used were before
territorial lockout).

Well, here's a way to see if these carts are really PAL, and run in the
JAP mode, because I just got done talking with more people, and no one
has ever heard of this configuration, and these people are hard-core
SEGA fans..

Do you get extra borders on the top and bottom of the screen, like
this?

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the asian MDs are just a Euro unit in Jap
clothing (Eng text, 50Hz). I've got one and that's what it appears to be
(borders).

FWIW, a couple of weeks ago I was doing some quick disassemblies of
various Sega CD BIOSes to try to get some idea how the region checks
worked and found one that is apparently from an Asian PAL CD system.

The filename was "MegaCD Model 1 BIOS V1.00 (J) (Dec 1991) [!].zip", and
the version info is "(C)SEGA 1991.DEC MEGA-CD BOOT ROM 12/28-1991
OS220:30 1.00S MEGA-CD BOOT ROM BR 000002-1.00". Its region error
message says "ERROR! THIS IS A PAL-COMPATIBLE MEGA CD FOR EXCLUSIVE USE
IN SOUTHEAST ASIA" and it actually checks for the region detect register
at $A10001 having both high bits set, which is the same as European PAL.

The region error message is 21 bytes shorter than the usual "ERROR! THIS
IS AN NTSC-COMPATIBLE MEGA-CD FOR EXCLUSIVE USE IN JAPAN AND SOUTHEAST
ASIA", in version 1.00p of 12/17-1991 so I don't think it's just a hack.

And yes, I was surprised that they didn't set the high bit to zero for
its region detect just to make it different from Euro-PAL, but I've
gotten the impression that Sega just didn't care much about region
detect in the early days of the Megadrive.

So maybe there's some truth to the Hong Kong speculation.
