I feel that C.J. Cherryh is one of top female authors in either
the SF or Fantasy field. Downbelow Station was masterful, the
Morgaine Trilogy was excellent, and The Tree of Swords and
Jewels (the sequel to Dreamstone, which I haven't read) was very
good. She is one of those people who are equally at home in
either genre. To your friend, I suggest you have him read some
of her work, especially Downbelow Station, Serpent's Reach, and
The Faded Sun Trilogy. He is missing some of the best work in
the field by his silly "first principles". He sounds awfully
chavinistic to me. He may be beyond hope.
I have also read Tanith Lee's Death's Master, which I thought
was excellent. But unfortunately, this is the only one of hers
that I've read.
I find female authors in general to be far more interesting
than most male authors. I think that the prejudice is waning,
and that the majority of readers accept female authors. Your
friend is the exception, not the rule.
