I've played the C64 version of Archon; the Atari version should
be similar.  Like most Byte reviews, their bit on Archon is
mostly empty hype.  The potentially interesting strategy part of
the game is dominated by the not-very-good arcade-like part.
Playing against the computer is NO FUN because unless you are a
real arcade wizard it will slaughter you in short order.

Not only is Archon fact (and a wonderful game), but Archon II is
out!  I haven't got a chance to play it, but it looks like there
are some additional or changed characters, as well as
improved graphics.
