Actually, in the book Dave never even tries to get Frank.  Instead, HAL
opens the pod bay doors while Dave is inside the ship (causing the air
to escape), and he is forced to locate an emergency closet with an
oxygen tank in it.  Not nearly as exciting, but it does attribute more
sense to Bowman.
