Libertarian Adrian Wyllie wants to be Florida's next governor. Kind of.

"I don't (want to), quite frankly,'' the 43-year-old Dunedin native said during a recent Northwest Florida campaign swing. "I would much prefer if I had a government in Tallahassee that would defend our rights, stay out of our wallets, our bedrooms and our businesses. If that was the case, I'd have no reason to be governor.''

But it's not the case, said Wyllie, who currently is polling at 9 percent in Florida's 2014 gubernatorial race, behind current Republican Gov. Rick Scott and former Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican turned Democrat, who has not yet announced plans to run.

Wyllie, who is president of an information technology consulting firm, said he wants to restore economic and civil liberty in Florida and that current leaders have abandoned Constitutional principles.

His proposals include eliminating federal regulations on goods grown and manufactured in Florida and sold only in Florida, saying the federal government doesn't have the right to regulate in-state commerce.

He also wants to limit or eliminate regulations on small businesses, cut ad valorem taxes, and conduct state business using gold and silver in case the U.S. dollar declines in value.

And, "the elephant in the room,'' is his -- and the Libertarian Party's -- support for marijuana legalization.

"We'll tackle that full on,'' said Wyllie, former chairman of the Libertarian Party of Florida. "Quite frankly, it's not my thing. But it's a freedom issue and it's a Libertarian issue whose time has come. We should regulate it like alcohol.''
