Hi Ian Kim,

since english is not my first language as well, i can understand you problems very well.
The 'problems' i have described are not very serious. The central function (disk emulation) works very well. I think that there are many point that can be optimized and your chosen platform is well suited for this.

Im very interested in the future of this product. There is much potential in this.

Hi all,

I just received my SD Disk ][ today, and I'm a bit puzzled as to how to use it. I have everything plugged in and the card is installed in slot 7. When I boot the //e, it takes me to the "smartport virtual hard-drive" screen. From there, I can run Copy 2 Plus, run Apple II System Utilities, do a PR#6, or go to Games. This appears to be the 32MB SDHD hard drive in "Drive1". I can also do a CAT,D2 and "Drive2" appears to be an 800K floppy with a copy of Neuromancer.

So far, the Dial Control doesn't do anything except show the "Busy" status. It doesn't seem to matter whether the button is on Drive 1 or 2. I can access either drive via the Apple //e.

Now, I think what I'm missing is the "tty" part from an external computer. I'm assuming that if I can somehow get a serial connection (either via USB or bluetooth), then I will get the Image Selection menu in a terminal window. Is that correct?

Assuming this is true, has anyone gotten this to work with a Mac? I'm running 10.9.5, and I can't get the serial connection to work. I came close with the USB - I was able to use "screen" to connect to the tty.* device, and then the terminal window started spewing all sorts of garbage. Pushing the buttons on the Dial Control actually caused the garbage to change, so at least I know that I was connected.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

-Chris

Thanks for purchasing,

To select iamge file,
You need to set terminal.
There are two options. One is bluetooth connection the other one is USB Serial connection on you PC. Both types will show what image using and file list etc.

For bluetooth connection, for andriod, I recommanded to use the Blueterm, you can search and connect the SD_DISK#?? then you can have connection.

and the other way is using terminal software on your PC, And you need proper setup on your terminal software as speed speed -> 115200bps, databit-> 8bits, stopbit1 and no parity.
After configure it, just press Reset button on external controller, then you can see some list as classic DOS screen.
If you have any difficulty just let me know.

Thanks,
Ian kim

Thanks Ian for the help! By the way, I sounded somewhat negative in my earlier post. I'm very excited about using this card. It was awesome to be able to boot up and have a 32MB "hard drive" available on my Apple //e.

I think my problem right now is over on the Mac - I can't figure out how to get the terminal working. I think a lot of things changed with the latest 10.9 version of Mac OSX.

Has someone else gotten this to work with a Mac?

The USB-adapter is actually a USB->Serial converter and needs a special MacOSX driver.
The Bluetooth connection can be used directly but you should use a Terminal program for USB and Bluetooth. I Use CoolTerm and can directly select the correct interface.

Please check my blog I put some driver for MAC.
Sorry, I don't have MAC for test.

In fact, no need to hooked up to 5V.
But GND is always required. :)

Version 2.50C have useful function as under.

1) XMODEM file transfer protocol now support.
You can send files between PC with SD DISK][.

2) You can change speed of serial baud rate.
115200baud/57600baud/19200baud/9600baud are support

3) DSK to NIB file converting function integrated.
You can convert DSK to NIB file by command mode.

3) Some of terminal log/status messages are changed for easy reading.
4) Terminal key-in routine was improved.
5) Status command shows more information of SD DISK][ Emulator.
6) File selection bug fixed

Hi Ian,

I can't seem to get the firmware upgrade to work. I copied the "SDBIOS.ROM" to the root of the SD card, put the card back into the board, then restarted the Apple //e while holding down the Dial (Yes) button and the Exit (No) button. While I am holding down the buttons, I see the "Apple //e" at the top and nothing else happens. Then, when I finally release the buttons, the system starts up normally and goes straight to the "Smartport" screen.

I never see the words "system check...".

Is there something that I am doing wrong?

Thanks!
-Chris

Hmmm, I think it actually updated itself. I just checked with the terminal program and it's reporting version 2.50C. Is that strange that I didn't get any "system check" message and it didn't restart?

Hi Chris,
The message will show on terminal screen(115200 baud)
'System check..'message doesn't show on your APPLE2 system.
After updated firmware, you may need to reboot APPLE2.
The restarting is only SD DISK][ Emulator not APPLE2 maybe needed some more explaination on manual.
Anyway, It looks updated properly.

Thanks.

I glad to announce new firmware V2.51
This firmware support some of copy protected NIB image.
You can play more games on your APPLE2.
Please update your SD DISK][ Emulator board and enjoy it.
V2.51 Firmware is here

http://quick09.tistory.com/1209

And I'm making an external version of SD DISK][ Emulator.
it could be used with APPLE2 series such as APPLE][, ][+ //c and IIGS(may work) but required DISK][ controller.
Reading is fine and It started writing now.
I'm trying to improve it then will make proper board.

Thank you
Ian kim

Hi Ian,

Thanks so much for the update! I'll install it when I get home tonight.

One quick question - have you thought about creating a way to set the disk image from the Apple II itself? Perhaps you could have some code in the card's ROM with a very simple menu system?

If you did that, then there would be no need for the bluetooth or USB hookup to an external computer or to an LCD. You could just change it from within the Apple II and reboot.

Just a thought.

Keep up the great work!
-Chris

Hi Chris,

New firmware will announced in my blog and you can see some more.
And now, it works withe APPLE IIGS and GSOS working fine.(Maybe need some more test).
And your concerns about the menu, It was planned and I simply tried to make it and worked.
I'm not so good with 6502 assembler and it make me spend some time.
Anyway, Some of firmware will have this menu function and you can choose image file on your APPLE2 without other connection.
I'm looking for easy and better way to integrate it.

Thank you,
Ian Kim

I'm trying to hook up an LCD to the External Dial Control. The manual states that the pins are +5V, GND, and Serial. Which pin is which?

Thanks!

Just received a reply from Ian:

The LCD connector pins has
(From the top)
TX
GND
+5V
* TX signal is TTL signal not RS232C signal.

I wired this up to a SparkFun Serial-Enabled LCD kit:
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10097

The first thing was to program the Arduino to accept the serial connection at 115200 baud, which is what the SD Disk ][ outputs. The rest of the Arduino sketch just takes characters from the TTL input and outputs them to the LCD. It could use some more work - right now it doesn't scroll, and it doesn't clear to the end of the line when it sees a carriage return. Anyway, here's the sketch:

/*

Hi Chris,

It is very nice approach by Arduino.
It looks very useful for other users too.
Anyway, I also prepared to make another LCD display and it has more lines.

Thanks

Hi, everyone.

I built LCD display for SD DISK][ Emulator.
It can display 21x6 and make sound when DISK access.
Simple but some funny.
It will be included from next selling of SD DISK][ Emulator.
Please refer the below for picture.

Thank you
